Creating solid mounting spots through plastic trim

Hey all, I was wondering if brighter minds then me had already figured this out as I am scratching my head on this one.

I am installing a cargo net behind my rear seats and want to install macs tie downs to make the net secure and easily removable. (Please for the love of god, don't give me other options as macs were damn expensive)

How do I create a solid mount behind the plastic trim? As best as I can come up with, would be remove the trim, put a fat ball of clay against the metal, cover it in Saran Wrap, and remount the trim to pack the clay down.

Then of course bending up a scrap of metal to match the depth of the clay.

Anyone have a better or easier solution?

(Of course all this has to wait anyways, attempting to remove plastic right now would result in it shattering, as it is a balmy 1 degree F right now.)

If you already have your mounting locations mapped out, I would drill a small pilot hole through the trim then insert and mark a piece of wire to determine the height of your mounting tabs (don't forget to subtract the thickness of the trim).

Here is a link to a fabricator from Full Size Bronco who has made some mounts for a grab bar that seem like a very similar build to yours. Keep clicking on the next link to see how he did his.

Hope this helps.

lets see if I can explain this. use a post/spacer. find tubing that your mounting hardware will pass through. drill a hole in the plastic that the tubing will fit through. cut the tubing to length, to take up the space between the plastic and sheet metal. then install the bracket, spacer and screw. I hope I explained this so you can understand. highdesertranger
