Cuba- Portrait of A People

Lost Canadian

I just returned from Cuba where I spent some time travelling around getting to know the island and its wonderful people. I have a lot to say about the island and I'll put together a travel report soon, but in the mean time here are the first few pictures. As I get through my photos I will add them to my linked gallery below. I hope you enjoy. If you have any questions, about the island, the people, or the photos, feel free to ask.

Yes. Cuban immigration didn't actually stamp any passports. They give you a paper visa that you have to carry with your passport and it is given back when you leave. It's a little different from some countries. I ran into an American in Vinales that got to Cuba via Miami on a so called "religious mission." At least that's what he told me while we were chatting and slinging back a few Bucanero's. :)

This is great news, before student travel was stopped, I was planning on going in college. This is great news. Thank you!

Interesting... so why can't US citizens travel to Cuba directly from the US?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_embargo_against_Cuba

Because they're a communist socialist government, and therefore not worthy of our commercial spending. After all, if you stayed in a Hilton there, then that tax revenue would go towards buying health care for millions of their residents. And that would be against everything America stands for....

Err, wait a sec...

Anyway, I just got back from traveling Belize, where I met several American folks who made the trip in from Cancun. They said that, to echo Trevor, simply fly in from a non-US airport, and they'll NOT stamp your US passport upon arrival. They'll give you a traveller's visa which is good 60 days and you must carry at all times. Then fly back to a non-US airport, and when you depart, they take back the paper visa. When you get back to the states, USCBP will never know you were there.

Be advised, though, that according to the gang I hung out with in Belize, there is little traveller infrastructure. I was told to use [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Lonely-Planet-Cuba-Country-Guide/dp/product-description/1741049296"]this book[/ame], be prepared to crash with families via word-of-mouth contacts, and just wing it. They did, for three weeks, backpacking the whole time, saw much of the island, and loved it all. From what I can tell, Trevor did, too.

Thanks for sharing, Trevor. Your pics are stunning.

PS> I don't travel anywhere in the developing world without trolling the LP forums for info. Lots of great knowledge in there.

Thanks everyone. I will post a link here when I get around to the trip report. I will say, having seen both sides of the political back and forth with Cuba and the US, both sides are guilty of extreme over propagandizing and painting false truths. It's really quite unfortunate and sad because it's the people in the middle, on both sides that get caught in the mire, and neither of which are given open opportunity to witness or seek the truth for themselves. I'll talk more about this in my trip report.
