I have a 98 3/4 ton burb. 350 auto, 14 bolt rear, g 80 and I love it, but I hate the gas milage. Instead of replacing it im considering buying a cucv off gov liquidation and puttin the motor in my burb. has anyone ever tried this? Thanks Greg

How much fuel for driving and exploring could the cost and time of the swap cost? Being a 98 you could look into a junkyard 6.5 and build it the rightway and drop it in. For every hater of the 6.5 there is a dedicated owner who loves them, I like them and if I were in your shoes that would be my choice.

I will look into the 6.5 thank you. as far as the cost, Im spendin 70 buks a week just to go to work. 11 miles each way. the burb is in great shape and I hink doin a moor swap will be cheaper han replacing it

I am currently watching the auctions for a truck to do this conversion...that would give me a 6.2L non-turbo, 1 ton axles, hydroboost brakes and a few more bits. The only issue it the trucks go for a bit more than the Blazers. And according to my buddy the Blazers are no good to us as you only get the engine that is worth using, nothing else is.

My other option is watching for a diesel suburban and that would give me everything to use (but only 3/4 axles vs 1 ton).

I love my 1970 Burb but want the better mileage and increased range.

have any of you checked steel soldiers? they are a wonderful site and are more than pleased to help with any questions and could possibley even tell you where to find a good cheap 6.2, after all, these are the guys that buy from gov liq in bulk

for gregz, the 1 ton front axle that come in those trucks would not work for a sas. the diff is on the wrong side. your body style is "ford side" not "chevy side". i know this may be redundant, but you need to be aware before buying so you don't get stuck with an axle that you can't use.

on a side note. if you were to buy one of those trucks and needed to unload the axles, i am slo in wv and would be interested. thanks.

there are lots of ppl in here >>>>>boring<<<< domestic section complaining about those 6.2 or 6.5 motors, by saying it wont last more than 300k, they make me smile.

KIDS 300k miles is around the world global travel about 5 times, some of u never been 200 miles away from ur house. dont worry about 6.2 it wont let u stranded

when my 6.2 or 6.5 goes bad after 300k miles, i am sure i can afford another motor.

as far as power i hope u know this is not diesel power magazine, you are on expedition portal, u dont need 1000 hp diesel to go camping,

my 6.5 td hummer PUSHED 32 passenger loaded tour bus up the hill, i think my camping gear is a little lighter than that bus so i should be ok :)

i usually see the military blazers sold for around 4-5k i dont know about from a surplus. but if you just want better fuel milage, why wouldn't you just sell the burb. and just buy the cucv. then you get straight axles and leafs all around. you get the diesel, and one ton drivetrain do you need all that room inside the burb?

yea, i do need the room. 6 kids, 4 grandkids. seems like I always have full house. but its fun. and hanks Jake i didnt know abou the diffs, i thought i could do a sas. if I ge a cucv Ill let you know.

not entirely true, you can use a chevy passenger side drop dana 60 in a later model burb, just make sure to use the pass drop tcase as well. which if you are buying a cucv for parts you will get a tcase with the cucv that should bolt up. ford axles are easier because they are drivers drop so you wouldn't have to switch out your tcase. the ford axle to get would be a 77-79 dana 60 with 32" spring spacing, the later ones are 36" and require a little more fab to make work.

Any thing can work. You could also doubble up your transfer cases. I would just find the burb with the motor you want and go to town building. I tend to make what i want work for me than me work for it.

thanks bftank. i forgot about some of the np241 equipted chevy trucks. this transfer case would enable the use of the chevy drop front dana 60.

everyone feel free to correct me again if its needed, but all the cucv's that i have read about or seen have had an np208. i don't know if this will bolt onto gregs tranny in his suburban or not.
