Custom adventure trailer stolen in Billings, MT

Came across this on several Facebook pages

It was stolen, stripped and vandalized and recovered in Billings, MT. Not to be insensitive, I'd really like to know more about this custom trailer. I hope the owner had it insured properly and recovers any and all costs incurred. I'd love to find these thieves and deliver some frontier justice to them. Thieves suck...

I think I would go with a trailing-arm or Timbren axleless setup

I saw that - and that someone set up a go fund me page to help them continue their trip - on the axle design, one thought is to use standard axle parts, so any break down can be fixed anywhere and not have to order in parts... kind of the Chevy motor debate on engine swaps for US travel. I agree. looks like a cool design.

That's a good point!

I sure hope he gets some $$$$ to continue the trip. Man I hate thieves. Did I mention that already??

Timely post as I'm about to take a trip up to Wyoming with my trailer. What are people doing to secure their trailer while they are aware? The best I have right now is to remove the trailer tongue and reinsert a locking hitch pin. Any other methods? It's a single axle.

Hmmm. Good question. I think what you are doing is probably about the best you can do. Remove the wheels or put up on blocks lol

I've been known to run a chain and lock through the wheels spokes and around the axle springs.

And I like the simplicity of leaf springs and a solid axle.

That would help, unless they had time and a big bolt cutter. Combine that with locking the hitch, you take a lot of the "opportunity " away from a thief.

Cable is better than chain. Like winch cable. Much more difficult to cut with a bolt cutter because it tends to squish. A hacksaw will get it, quicker than a hacksaw will get chain, but a bolt cutter will toast chain in a moment. Most thieves like the easy way. Hacksawing isn't the easy way.

If your parked up in a remote area. Set up a game camera. The trailer may still disappear, but you will have video on the effort.

Some of you put a lot of time and work into security, doing things like taking the tires with you!

I make sure my trailer is over-insured and then use three locking hitch pins with a Max Couple... I disconnect the trailer, then replace the blue circled pin, and relock it.

Back on topic... looks like it was a great little trailer. Anyone have a link to a build thread?

I'm looking for a build thread as well. I saw a photo on XO's page showing them travelling north in Alberta on Hwy 2. Had the trailer back together, except RTT and awning were gone. Yes, replacing the hitch with something that locks and prevents from hitching it up in a hurry is one of the easiest things you can do to prevent crap like this. Did I mention that I hate thieves?

Here's a better photo of the rig before and after as it travels up Hwy2 in Alberta the other day
