Custom trailer build starting

The builder will be picking up the axle today so it shouldn't be long before I get the trailer. I am trying to decide on wheels/tires. I am leaning towards a 15x8" steel wheel with 235/75r15 all terrain tires. I have found some pictures showing this combination and they look like what I am after. Any suggestions welcome. It will be pulled by my Suburban for reference so I am wanting it to be similar in stance.

I run a 15x8 steel procomp wheel on my XJ. Mine sit fairly stances out with 3.75” backspacing and a 32x11.5” MT. I do believe the wheel comes in a less offset option that would work great with a 235-75-15 or even 31” all terrain. I run the 1069 series and no complaints after a year.

Yeah, that length is cutting it close but I am only 5'6" and may consider making the rear door with a bit of an expanded area if needed. I checked out a 4x6 and a 5x7 trailer at Lowes and I think the 4x6 will work as is.

I ordered a set of 15x8 procomps with the 3.75" backspacing;

and 235/75r15 tires

According to the builder, the hubs stick out 4.5" from the side of the trailer. So I have a set of 1.5" spacers coming as well. I found some reviews/picts of those size tires and 8" wide wheels and they seem to be a good match.

On a side note, I got a 2 month notice at my current job recently. So the cross country trip I had planned with this trailer in the spring is up in the air. I am job hunting and may take another OCONUS contract for awhile. I am thinking I may put this trailer together a lot faster than anticipated and travel a few weeks before I head out. I would need to be done and back home by mid Nov. Actually, I would love to be traveling for the Halloween season! So, once I get the trailer, probably tomorrow or the next day, I may be doing a mad rush to finish it (and finish outfitting my Suburban with the inverter, solar panels etc). I will hopefully have some good picts and updates in the next day or 2.

Finally an update. What an adventure. It took the builder a little longer than quoted because of the non standard dimensions. He had to pick up an axle for a 4' wide bed. He made 2 mistakes. First, even though I showed him pictures and told him I wanted the entire thing framed so I can cover it, he left the roof braces off. No biggie really. He also built it the wrong size, but that ended up perfect actually. It ended up being a 4x8 bed instead of 4x6. The extra 2 feet does add some headroom and still looks good and makes it more useful.

So, I mounted the wheels/tires and took it for a drive to go get some lumber that was being offered to me for free. Well, mud-grip tires DO throw rocks into a rear windshield! As soon as I heard the crash I knew what happened. I was almost at the end of the dirt road. 10 seconds more and I would have been good. I was planning on installing fenders but got too excited about the free lumber. The window replacement quote was $420! Man, expensive free lumber. But wait! The next morning I was a "Pull-A-Part" when they opened at 8am and BAM! They had several rear windows for my suburban. $33 total! I got off easy. Lesson learned. I picked up fenders later that day.

I used 1x6 treated boards for the bed as opposed to plywood as the with was actually 50" so I would have had to piece it together. The plywood roof is just sitting on top for not but I will probably screw it down tomorrow. I am going camping this weekend and am going to use the trailer for extra gear (sleeping in my awning-room).

So the brief few times I have pulled it, I have really liked it! It is so nice with small amount of width it takes up on back country roads and not having to worry about driving so slow.

Well, life is getting in the way now and I have to focus time and money on a job change so it may be awhile before do much more with it. The next thing will be the aluminum siding but not sure how long it will be before I get around to that.trl (1).jpgtrl (2).jpg

It is looking good. What sealant did you use between your boards in the floor.

Just silicone. The wood is pressure treated. After the silicone I am putting coat of spray bedliner (top and bottom), then a rubber mat, thin padding and then carpet.

I installed the foam board insulation on the sides today. The rear door will be here next week. Once that arrives and is installed I will enclose the front and rear. I will probably be out of the country for awhile after that so it will sit for awhile before any major updates.

A little more progress. Rear door installed. I offset it so the door, when open, wont stick out as far and this will allow a little space inside to build a shelf/storage area.

how do you plan to attach the interior paneling to the frame? I'm Trying to figure the best way, and want to avoid using too many screws.

is that flat stock being used for the trailer box framing? interesting as it doesn't add any rigidity...or is it just there for backing for the sides to attach to?

The 2 interior flat slats are flat stock. Basically just an anchoring point for the 2x2s which are attached via carriage bolts. I will then screw the interior panels to the 2x2s.

A bit more progress today. The exterior is done now. My next step will be the rubber floor, roof vent, roof sealant, floor insulation and carpet. Then the side door, roof rack, a/c etc.
