I used to have a safety thimble on my winch. After about an hour straight of winching and many many rerigging scenarios I realized I needed a hook.
I bought a new winchline with just a regular thimble and run a detachable Gunnebo hook like this.

The ProLink and FlatLink are two completely redundant pieces of rigging, and not redundant in a good way. Besides a winch stop they off no safety or ease of rigging over a regular genaric thimble.
