D110 respray

Hi everyone.

I have a 1997 Defender 110 STW, it's in good condition, but has some typical problems that need attention such as the door frames.

Next May the plan is to take most of the bodywork apart, go through the most common trouble areas, fix the doors and some minor bumps and scrapes, and try to prolong the bodyworks working life as much as possible.

I've got access to really good professional abrasive blasting and respray facilities, with professional people to help me out, all free of charge... (it pays off to network...)

Since it's going to be a big project and alot of the bodyworks coming off and alot will be blasted and sanded, I figured it'd be a good time to go for a different colour aswell.

It's currently an Epsom green metallic, with a white roof. I do like the current colour too, but it's a bit dark. I might like something a little lighter and 'friendlier'. Here's a pic to give you an idea what it looks like. Mine used to be spot on like that when I bought it, but it's since that gotten an external + internal rollcage (CT style), Wolf-rims (in black), Cooper STT's, rear quarter windows blanked off, 1" lift and some underbody armor...

What colour would you go for?

I would stick with stock color unless you can completely disassemble the body. Otherwise there will be areas you cant get to and it will be obvious that the vehicle color was changed. That may affect the value. To what degree, I am not sure since you live in Finland.

In the US those 110s are worth a lot of money, and I am sure any paint job that changes the factory color and doesnt cover every painted part, AND doesnt appear like a factory paint job, would serously devalue the car. Just my opinion.

I like the original color -- one of my favorites. I wouldn't change a thing!

I travel to Finland often -- and almost never see a Land Rover there. Not a common vehicle, even in a country that loves its cars.

Kiitos,

you are fortunate enough to have one of the best paint color combos offered (imho) so I would keep it. If your are die hard for a color change most of the grays offered by LR look awesome on defenders.

No one would change the dark green? :) Sand? Khaki? G4 Orange?

The Finnish Land Rover community is small, but warm and welcoming (like it seems to be pretty much everywhere!)

There are pretty regular off-road events and Land Rover meets atleast in Southern Finland.

Overlanding on the other hand is very rare and I know only of less than half a dozen others who are into it... Finns are pretty timid travellers.

Those things come apart so easily it seems like you'd have less problems getting it painted properly than a Disco or an RR or something.

That's a pretty nice color, Timo, but you can't go wrong with Sandglow if you can get the right paint...

I would consider changing it to White, or Sand or Gray but not G4 Orange. I don't think a large vehicle like a D110 would look good in orange.

G4/Tangiers orange is one of those weird colors that -- to me at least -- only looks good when there are a healthy amount of sponsorship stickers on the truck.

Vesuvius Orange is the one color many people seem to like -- I think it's a bit much.

And you can never go wrong with white.

Keep the same color. I really like the Epsom green color. My D1 was Epsom green. Otherwise, I'd paint it white. Only two LR colors I truly like (and I have owned Silver, White Gold, Red (i think Rojas, cant remember), and Black. The other three LRs I owned were green. Its a great LR color.

Don't go for Sandglow yellow - it'll just look like an incomplete attempt at a Camel Trophy knock-off, and though the genuine CT vehicles must be the most desirable Defenders built, the fakes are ridiculous and Sandglow is an ugly colour (it was only used by LR as it was still languishing in the store rooms from the British Leyland days, when the colour was used on a lot of awful cars like the Allegro, Meastro and Princess).

I'd keep it Epsom for the reasons already given. White is a good alternative in hotter countries, where it prevents the body from heating in the sun, but in Finland you don't need that benefit and it could be less visible and thus more hazardous in the winter.
