daily driver suggestion?

Perhaps you already know this, but a used Defender 200tdi complete drivetrain (engine, transmission, transfer case, ancillaries) goes for about £1000 in the UK. If you are RHD then you can use the much more common Disco 200tdi, which goes for about £500 again including ancillaries, transmission and transfer case. All you gotta do is figure out how to get them here.

equicar in the U.K. usually has used 300 tdi's for 500 or so GBP and they ship to the U.S. I have the weld on motor mounts for $95 bucks and they are exact copies of the land rover mount. I have done 2 300 tdi's and have one in my 84 110 that i drive daily and it is a good engine, a little under powered for a loaded 110 in the Colorado rockies.

I do have to pay attention to the fuel gauge as it goes so long between fill ups I forget some times. My NAS 3.9 never went much more than 200 miles between fill ups.

I would say rebuild what you have though as it will be cheaper in the long run.

ok good info but since my truck is RHD? it will be able to take a disco 200 tdi?

200tdi

Disco 200 tdi has the turbo mounted down very low. The turbo will hit the frame rail in the Defender chassis. Most go with the 200 tdi out of a Defender as the turbo is mounted up high out of the way. Or find a Defender 200 tdi exhaust manifold and swap it over.

A Disco 200tdi can be swapped into a RHD Defender. It is done with such regularity in the UK that there is an exhaust downpipe offered on ebay.uk for this exact application.

There are some modifications required, but this is a very common swap in the UK and is well documented on the web.

My RHD 110 is a disco 200, sits further back but that's because it's mated to the disco drivetrain. No real room for the stock air cleaner box, still trying to configure that.

If your drivetrain is Defender things will work out nicely or so I've been told.

thanks Meatblanket, and GM13 i would most likely ask for a defender tranny with the disco 200. Just so while i am rebuilding the TDI i can send the tranny out to be rebuilt. or just new syncrhos and what not put in, rovers down south sells an LT77 overhaul kit for like 450$
