Pokey,
Are those FJcruiser rims?
Did you have to use spacers to use them?

DEL

yep- those are fjcruiser steelies. they have 4.5"+backspacing--so with 40axles--you will need to use 1.25" plus spacers. (mine are 1.25 off of my 80.).

fjc rims can be found cheap ($200 for my set of 5) and if you happen to have spacers from other projects laying around- its a no brainer. In an ideal world i think 1.5" would be great with 12.5" width meats.

My commute to work is only about 10 minutes, so it's my vehicle of choice. If I have to go to headquarters, I use the county vehicle.:)

True 4X, not a 40 ;-)

Here's mine. It's not a 40 but a 44 diesel. Drive it every day since I sold my other car. They got the same mileage (30 mpg) so why not!?

I am going to go 80 this winter though :( when I start the body work to get rid of the surface rust during a frame off rebuild :) :).

Here is my DD for the past 12 years. The past 2 years have been tough with starting a family, but I think the cruiser is here to stay. In fact my 2 year old boy drove with me to the gas station today screeming "Dada's Cwoozer! Dada's Cwoozer!" it was a sweet moment.

I obviously don't drag the trailer everyday, but we do love camping with it.

I have spent my whole life in a 350 powered 40 series...My Dad bought it when I was three...From car seats to riding shot gun to learning to drive in it...It was going to be my 16th b-day present a number of years ago but an unfortunate accident prevented that...I actually cried the Day it left our yard on a flatbed trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF6vbDoqIVU Theres a video of the old girl. We called it the land Crab. Anyways. It was a mostly daily driver, very noisy with that chev motor under the hood even with the quietest exhaust. Dad like to here the induction noise more...haha. Well two winters ago we restored a bj 42. We really do drive that truck every day. Either me or him...lol Yes I still live at home but hey it helps pay the bills while I finish of College and those fancy edumacations. Dads been talking about getting something a little bigger and more comfortable. He's not as crazy as he once was but he always gives me a huge run for my money when we head out. Even on the motorbikes. Old men dont get old...they just have more grit in their teeth and more spit in there eyes. So dont know what will happen to the 40 but I will probably take it and get a new tub for it and some other pieces to make it even more pretty then the cheap paint job and fiberglass in the rust holes...lol. So I will have my own daily driver cuz once its done the 4runner will be given to the wife or something like that. But thats still in the future. I always thought of a 40 with some restored seats as a good daily driver...especially with the diesel in it...those things never die. They just keep on trucking

Mine doesn't run yet but I do DD my fj62 :) I want to dd the 40 once it's up and running, knock on wood, but I have a short commute. Is it bad on the rig if the short commute doesn't get the engine revved up? How long do you need to drive it for optimum operating temps? it's a '68 with a '76 2f and 4 speed for the drive train.

It's hard on any engine to if it makes short runs runs without getting fully hot. There is water vapor in the crankcase and exhaust that only gets expelled if the engine gets hot enough to vaporize it. If it doesn't get expelled it will sit there and rust-out your exhaust and make nasty sludge in your engine.

The good news is, it's a cast-iron 2F and they actually warm up pretty quickly if the thermostat is good. Mine will be at 180 degrees within 2 miles, but I like to run it longer than that to make sure everything is thoroughly heated. If you can't drive it very far every day, at least give it a good run once a week or so.
