Defender 110 Alternatives.

Since Defenders seem to be difficult to obtain (California based) with price rises giving bitcoin a run for its..er money, I want to ask Land Rover people what other vehicles have similar space (seat 4), the ability to put an Icarus style pop-up, and have basic kitchen space in the back. Replacing a 4Runner that no longer has the space we need. I considered an Excursion, but they seem a lot bigger than Defender.

I know in the EU there were option for a pop up style in the D3/D4, and those rigs would be my domestic US choice. Might be $$$ to get one here and do the mods.

There are these ursaminor pop ups for the 4 door wranglers if that interests you.
Obviously tons of aftermarket support for the vehicles. It’s not eu but it is tough and reliable! Can get a diesel in the new models now too.

And many hard shell rtts.

What is your timeline for purchase?

There's a Defender 130 coming from JLR in the mid-term future. It's going to be just as tech-heavy as the current 110s, but if that's not a deal breaker and instead you are finding the modern 110 not suitable because of space, the 130 allegedly will have an extra 13 inches of length which translates to a lot of extra space. 2023 timeline on that from what I read.

Ineos Grenadier is a lot closer to the original Defender in terms of it's design ethos -- solid axles, intended to be robust and rugged, and purpose built for commercial/adventure 4x4 use. Should be able to order one later this year for delivery next year.

Land Cruiser is always the answer to this question. Given your comment about "space" I am assuming something like a tall 4Runner (aka: Lexus GX470) is not big enough. That leaves you with the Land Cruiser or Lexus LX470

Not necessarily, the LC has less cargo area than a D3/4 (LR3/4)

A 70 series Troopy, yea. Not a 1 or 200 for interior living space.

OP needs a van.

Is this vehicle going to only be a weekend camping vehicle or a daily driver as well?
Not a daily driver. Multi-week trips. We would like to be inside at night, rather than on-top. Kinda tired of the putting the Jame Baroud up and down while being eaten alive.

Any idea on what the pricing is like on those? I also looked for measurements on their site but could not find anything. I really do want to put a pop top on it, so I think any of the new Defenders isn’t going to work for me.

Okay. Well that could fit the bill of what I was going to suggest. A crew cab truck. (pick your make / model)

Plenty of room for 4 people and you can set up the box however you like (Built out canopy, pop up truck camper, etc) Leave it set up in the box full time and you'll always be ready to go.

Or..... a trailer. Depends on the kind of travelling you want to do. Would a base camp situation work?

I have been thinking about a low roof transit. I like the idea of keeping the CG low. But the overall result is a bigger (longer) than I wanted.. I talked to UJoint about adding 4WD to transit. My preference would be something like a Rover, Troopy.. They both seem like they would be more capable.

You could look at a G-Wagen. A company called Schmude in Germany makes an AluCab Icarus like pop top for the G. It makes the Camptop in carbon fiber. Since the G didn’t change body shape for almost 40 years any LWB from 1979 to 2018 can take the Camptop.

It likely won't work, but time will tell; the new Defenders have a fabric roof option so it's not a total rule-out but I'm not familiar with any company actively pursuing a pop top as an option, and the manufacturing pictures I've seen show quite an "ingress" of vehicle structure into the roof area. The Ineos might work but they are currently testing prototypes so there's none in the hands of consumers who would take an angle grinder to the roof to try it out, but if you are looking at a 3+ year timeline, I think there might be something worth looking at there. Sooner than that though, no dice for either the new Defender or the Ineos, hence the question on timeline. In terms of pricing, Defender 110 is $60k and up (and up and up and up) depending on options; I imagine the 130 will be more spendy. The Grenadier is aiming for $50k Euro, which will likely translate to a $60k-$80k price in North America but nothing's been confirmed yet.

You could look to importing a Troopy with an Alu-cab style pop top on it. South Africa and Australia would be the best markets to look to for that. You could also look to the 4x4 Sprinters or even something like the Sportsmobile, if you're not familar. All the advantages of a body-on-frame truck, but in an enclosed van space with a built in pop-top.

Sportsmobile is def 1 one way to go. If a crew cab truck won't work and a van is a no go. What about a pop top on a domestic suv?
