You could look at a G-Wagen. A company called Schmude in Germany makes an AluCab Icarus like pop top for the G. It makes the Camptop in carbon fiber. Since the G didn’t change body shape for almost 40 years any LWB from 1979 to 2018 can take the Camptop.

Another vehicle to look at would be the Ford Bronco. Very capable out the box and I know the same company that makes Ursa Minor Camptops for Jeep JL is also making one for the Bronco. The advantage I feel on the Bronco is that the Camptop will have an easier access design because of the lack of mid roof bar.

I also like the suggestion of importing a Troopy. IMHO it’s the best platform for building a living space in a compact vehicle.

You could also look at truck options like Gladiator and Ram 2500 with camper tops like GFC or 4WheelCampers’ Hawk. But then the vehicle becomes large or you eat too much into payload.

Yeah. The G-Wagen, Defender, Troopy. All have shapes and space that make them useful for this type of build. Thanks for the link to Schmude, I did not know about them.

Sportsmobile is def 1 one way to go. If a crew cab truck won't work and a van is a no go. What about a pop top on a domestic suv?

Excursion was/is on my list of possibles. But the Defenders et. al. all seem to have a lower floor, and more useable space in the back.
