Defender engine swaps

Why would Lr use a feed from abs for speedo input into ECU when they had a electronic speedo drive ? , or were they not running leccy speedos in NAS spec back then ?

BTW we were putting small block chev engines into rangerovers (same engine as used in defender) back in 70's , fittings for conversion was available easily even tho it was in UK

The D2 uses ABS sensors for speed I think, I know the 97 D90 doesn't. As Dale said it has parts (CV's, Wheel Sensors and ABS ECU only) of a 96/97 era D1 ABS system in order to implement the rough road sense system needed for the GEMS set up. If it's not there the GEMS knock sensors can mistake the bumps and sounds of off road driving as pre-detonation. There is no tie in to the brake system so it has no actual ABS facility, just the wheel speed input.

There is a standard VSS at the back of the T-Case that feeds both the ECU and the electronic speedo. Again, same as the D1

x3 what has been said on checking your local and state regs. This will define (especially in CA) what you cannot do.

As far as swapping in something else, regs aside. Everything can be made to function on the '97 without the ECU's. Door chime, overhead lights, etc. Really not much that has to run.

If you go rebuild or 4.6 build , I would strongly reccomend that you get the block top hat linered with seals at bottom as well , as this totally solves the water ingress problems that arise with these blocks . I have had five V8s the 3.5 both no probs and 1 3.9 ok two other 4L had the block go, thought was h gasket at first . JMHO

I'm familiar with the top hat liners (was thinking of using Darton sleeves), but haven't heard of the seals at the bottom. . . Can you give more details on these?
