Delorme InReach pricing announced

I've spoken directly to the development team at Delorme about this product because I got them early for some government evaluations. I know they have plans for a bunch of upgrades to include an iOS version plus a vehicle mounting system/DC power option. No word on the timeline as of yet, though.

That is great news! You can only imagine that they are unless they signed some exclusive agreement ...

Here is my question if any one knows. I have thought of one of these or the spot for my trips south of the border where you get hit with crazy bills for using your phone there. If this can connect with your droid phone for two way communication, how does that work? Can I put my phone in airplane mode and still use the In-Reach for 2-way communication? This is a big selling point for me. I want to be able to use my smart phone where there is no coverage and I wont get hit with roaming fees by having it in airplane mode. If any one knows... I would love your reply. Thanks!

you can send and receive email or text messages on your android phone using the inReach to communicate with the Iridium satellite system.
.
When I put my Motorola Atrix 2 in airplane mode it turns off all the radios - GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi and cellular but I can selectively turn on just the GPS (needed for lat lon in any messages you send) and the Bluetooth radio (needed to communicate with the inReach).
.
When I want to send a text or email and recieve any messages waiting for me, I can turn on my cell phone wirh just the GPS and Bluetooth active and when done turn it off.
.
If you don't need tracking or support for the locate function, you can leave the inReach off when not communicatibg to save batteries.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I hope I am not being too dense here. But, if I understand you correctly, you can put phone in airplane mode and turn on the GPS & Bluetooth and have full functionality (tracking, support for the locate feature, texting, and email) with the In-Reach and not need to worry about roaming charges? That seems to solve all my needs! Now... for the pricing. Hmmm.....

No email -is just texting / short messages.

.
text messages to and from cell phone numbers and 160 character emails to any email address plus 160 character messages to and from other inReach devices.
.
People can respond to your email or initiate a message to you by filling out a message form on a delorme web page.
.
no email attachments, pictures, etc. just communication.

We ditched our first gen Spot a year ago... If the inreach goes iOS I'm on it! Can't someone in expo get a semi official statement from Delorme?

I am really debating getting this for our Australia trip...but 8 days before we leave is a tight timeline to get a new device and learn how to use it.

Still very cool of them to keep updating and improving the product.

Just get it :) You need to have something to do on that long plane ride.
