I was expecting the same thing, and was shocked as I had never heard of a detroit blowing out. Great price. Wish I had some free cash.

You've never heard of a Detroit blowing out? If you break an axle, the Detroit will go with it.

I do have a Detroit, though, and love it.

??????
I have broken not one but both axles @ an event (one after the other) and driven home 200 miles in diff lock. Replaced both axles and put it back on the road. That was 6500 miles ago. Maybe I was lucky or the newer soft lockers are an improvement over the old ?

Me too!

In response to Mike's post, when you refer to "axles", is that the term used in the US for what Brits call the "half shaft", ie. the driving shaft that connects the diff to the hub drive flange? If so, I can't see why breaking a half shaft should damage the diff unless the shaft has been uprated with one that is excessively strong. The UK's KAM Diffs make uprated shafts but make them fusible so that they'll shear at a specific point before harming other transmission components and without twisting splines making removal of the broken pieces a nightmare. There seems no point in fitting half shafts that are stronger than the other components as you'll just break something more expensive and difficult to replace.

Dividingcreek: I suggest that you go to the last page of the installation guide and make sure that your locker is actually still working properly. It is entirely possible that your locker is busted and is now completely locked and you don't even know it.

Snagger, I have no idea what the conventional wisdom is in the UK for driveline upgrades, but it is a no brainer to add a Detroit locker and some upgraded axles in the rear. I've been running this combo for years and have never busted anything in the driveline.

I'm confused by that - in your last post you said that blowing an axle (it does sound like you mean a half shaft, not the axle casing) would result in blowing the Detroit, but now you suggest they're near indestructible.

I have no experience of their stuff, but I've also never heard anything bad about them. However, if your first post is correct,t hen the shafts are flawed; they should fail before the diff.

Let me start over. In my first post I was simply stating that Detroits will fail nearly every time an axle shaft fails.

The factory axleshafts (halfshafts) often fail when used with a Detroit if the truck is offroaded. I use Great Basin Rovers halfshafts with a Detroit and the combo works fine.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have plenty of occasion to "check" my locker's functionality since I use the truck daily to make a living. Its fine.
