You put your Jeep in 4L in the sand? Even with only 2.73:1 gear reduction that's crazy :Wow1:

Not crazy trying to pull sand hills at high altitude. Being a mile above sea level robs HP. We were on a trail ride a few years back where the bottom of this hill was all whooped up from motorcycles and atvs where you could not build much speed. No one could make it in high range. The non-rubi's with the 2.73:1 lo went right up where those with the 4:1 could barely make it after multiple attempts.

You will not like the 4:1 in the sand

Most of our sand is flat, we do not have sandy hills, so it's beach driving and Pine Barrens sand.

I've had Rubi's in sand before, and never had an issue, maybe this is more of a climbing issues rather than say beach sand driving?

What the?? A few months ago I was arguing with people on this forum that low range isn't good for sand. Almost everybody else was saying low range is better on sand.

Yep, definitely a climbing issue. That is why I like options. I put a 4:1 KluneV in front of my 231 (this is before the rubi-crawler came out). I love having high range, 2.72:1, 4:1, and 10.8:1. Nice to have a gear for everything.

10.8:1? :Wow1:

I like the idea of Truetracs instead of lockers. There are advantages over the ARBs besides price. No air lines snaking around, no external parts to fail, no special maintenance

Couple visits a year to the off road park to get my rock fix, the rest of the time it's going to be exploring trails of the rocky, muddy, sandy nature. :smiley_drive:

that said and the fact that you already swapped in a 4:1 t-case makes me think you would not be satisfied with a lsd. I would think a selectable or a detroit in the back.

I personally think they are beyond rotten in the snow. Talk about a fast one way trip to the ditch.

Good luck there.

Just bite the bullet and go with the ARB.

(I have the Detroit in the front and the ARB in the rear and I can not begin to tell you how scary it is when I have to drive that thing in the snow! Further I can not tell you how much I wished I had gotten the ARB in the front as well. It would have been well worth it.)

My two bits.

Cheers

Truetrack is a Torsen LSD, not a lunchbox locker. They use them in a lot of sports cars and luxury cars. The Lexus IS comes with one now.

A normal diff can only send the same torque to both wheels. So if one wheel hits slippery ground and torque it can handle goes from 100% to 10%, same thing happens on the other side. With a Torsen there is some multiplier, so maybe the wheel with traction still gets 50%.
