I loved my 1988 XJ Limited -- 300k mi all over the country. Reliable (in terms of not stranding me -- the maintenance budget was getting close to replacement cost) and comfortable. The rocker panel, lower door, and quarter panel rust led to its sale a year or so ago as it was just getting to be too much to stay on top of. 25+ years of fun. The guy who bought it was very happy to get the ARB bullbar, OME suspension, Kaymar rear bar...
I bought a 2007 Cherokee CRD (Diesel) new as a potential replacement (or maybe an overall addition). What a piece of c**p that was. A dozen or more things wrong on delivery, and the dealer was unable to address a single one of them, nor follow up on any of the items they said they would. I sold it after six weeks and 1500 miles. Took a bath on it -- even the selling dealer wouldn't make an offer on it. I've given up on them. The Lexus RX 350 I replaced it with has been flawless for 8+ years, as has the 2001 Tacoma 4WD DC that took on the XJ's role in 2009.
Pity -- I was happy to be a Jeep guy until that POS WK.
