Diesel Liberty in CA

Interesting.

  • How is this particular TD?
  • How do you like your Liberty 4x4 overall?
  • Would this engine easily swap into a Wrangler?
  • Are they common, avail. in junkyards yet?
  • Is there any other better Chrylser family TD that will also fit into a Wrangler, like perhaps the MB engine from the original Sprinter?

Apologies for basic questions, I have been curious about these for last few years but not enough to do my homework. ;-)

There has only been a handful of fully functioning CRD to TJ swaps.

-Hotwire auto did one that I know of it works about 95%.
-AEV did one. Perfect swap, but not replicate-able.
-Burnsville has done one, maybe two, 100% function, but very involved.

This evening, Autotrader lists 127 Jeep Liberty Diesel vehicles for sale.
15 are in California. So they're not too hard to find.

Cheapest Liberty Diesel on Autotrader is $5500 for a vehicle that
suffered an engine fire. OK, skip that one. Next is one with 103K
miles for $9750.

You want a Jeep Liberty Diesel with low miles? Autotrader has a
listing for a Michigan car with 5000 miles, $13,600.

Are there any issues with registering a diesel Liberty here in the California Peoples Republic? Not sure I would ever opt for one, but I think it's worth considering.

Ron,

Any more information on the conversion you did? I would love to hear some more details. Was it a CRD KJ to TJ swap? Did everything function when you where done ( cruise, speedo, tach, etc? ) I live in Colorado and would love to check it out if its still around.

Also there is a Grand Cherokee here too.

Now, is the CRD, is that the Clean Diesel? The one that puts out practically zero emmisions, and gets 50 MPG? I mean, I know that Benz has one, and that VW has one, is this the same thing?

Thanks

PS, for the OP, if this add is for YOUR vehicle, please forgive me, seeing as it was a CL listing I assumed you are not affiliated. If you are please PM me, and I will delete this post. Cheers

Clean Diesel....no, I don't think so. They are basically just your standard Bosch CP3 common rail injection system. They do have EGR and a Cat. They don't get 50mpg either. They seem to get about 30mpg in stock form if driven responsibly and after they are broken in. The are a VM motor from Italy (?), 2.8L, VGT turbo, and air to air intercooler.

Swapped into a TJ/LJ they will yield over 20mpg turning 35-37" tires even at 75mph on the interstate.
