Diesel or bust?

I don't great mileage, probably 25 to 28 mpg.

See, that's my dream. A long distance off-road adventure machine that gets such good mileage even a hippie would love it. I'd even run it on bio-diesel so I could have a bumper sticker that says something like, "Relax hippies, it's organic soybean oil." After much internal debate I've resigned myself to the fact that I will have to wait a while longer before I should or could actually do this conversion. Maybe it'll happen in about five years. You guys have given me some awesome ideas on engine choices, thank you.

you 'n me both :) I very nearly drove off with a CRD liberty, i wanted a diesel so badly. but ... in the end, a rubi LJ won me over. i have spousal approval to install a diesel when the 3yr / 36k warranty is out :wings:

See this is what I am wanting to do the I6 in my LJ Rubi will get tired soon enough then it will be time for a swap. I can only think that with the advent of the blue Tec V6 in the grands there will be a donor in my feature. With all the talk just here I am sure it is only a mater of time before some one like advanced adapters makes a kit or some other company out there markets a conversion. How long before DC offers it as a crate motor?

I can't wait! Oil burning airplanes and oil burning Jeeps! :jump:

yuppers - i was just thinking about it this morning ... (drifts into thoughts)

even if it only got 20mpg, and i swapped to a 24 gallon tank, i'd have a range of nearly 500 miles ... damn.

There is a 4 cylinder Cummins engine available, it used to be in a lot of GM bread trucks, if you can find one in a junkyard its easy to rebuild as it uses all the same parts as the six in the dodge trucks. Its supposed to have a Gm bell housing pattern which matches the gm small block v8 so you can get an adapter to put pretty much anything behind it. I was looking to get one for a while but needed a bigger truck for more cab space.

Been quite a few 4 cylinder versions of the engine in the Dodge trucks put in Jeeps, people get them out of the Fritos Lays delivery trucks. Everyone also seems to at least beef up the rear axle. The last I saw had a Ford 8.8 inch in it. The engines do indeed have GM autos behind them.
