Diesel servicing advice needed by novice.

Hello Brains Trust,

As this is my first ever diesel vehicle I need to know a few things...

I wish to replace all filters in the fuel system and am a little unsure of what to do in regards to "priming" the system afterwards.

I have a 2002 FG 4.2L and it has a filter with water bowl near the fuel tank and what looks like another 2 fuel filters on the injector side of the motor.

I am good with replacing all other fluids and filters on the truck, but the fuel system has me worried that I'll stuff it up and not know how to bleed it or if I need to. I know it has a hand primer pump...so that's a start.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sean

P.S. The truck is in final stages of completion and preparation for it's first real trip....... to Cape York in about 6 weeks! :Wow1:

Hi ours is 3.9l but a few good little tips before changing fuel filters that I have been taught over the years.
1. Make sure the truck starts first before you start changing filters.
2.Make sure the fuel tank is full or close to it.
3. Make sure the primer pump works.
4. Do the water trap first then start the truck then do the other 2 1 at a time make sure they prime up.

Wow the Cape that should be great.

Thanks PK,

I upgraded to a 200L tank recently and used the primer to get that working.... fluke maybe.

As I was priming it got firmer and firmer then felt like it lost pressure. I freaked out and pumped it for a while with no better results.... so I tried starting it and it worked...?

I might get a spare priming pump just in case.

And the Cape, yes I am really excited and nervous at the same time. Should be a good test trip!

Sorry forgot to say dont forget to open the bleed screw near the filters if yours has one then tighten it up once fuel comes out.

Starting to sound like I should look at a workshop manual first.

Any leads on where to locate one?

You can normally get them really cheap on eBay. The manual is in PDF format and from the dealer they run at about $300 for the 3 CDs!!!
Alternately, someone on here with the same year/model might be feeling generous...
