Diff Clips

Hello Gents,

I need a bit of a hand. I need an axel retaining clip (in the diff, holds the axel output shaft in) for an '03 Montero Limited. I have the part # at home, I forgot it this AM! They are discontinued from Mits, but I'm thinking that I may not be the first guy ever in this predicament. Does anyone know of another clip or have access to an aftermarket one?

on a side note, this is the second time that this has happened to me in a year!! What the heck am I doing so wrong? last time I swapped the diff thinking that it was a larger problem. worked great until now. I honestly don't even get this thing off road (gravel travel when I'm lucky). A dealer in the US said that they used to sell these quite often. My poor Montero has 268,xxx kms on it, and id like to get another couple years out of it.

any help would be great.

thank you

What happened to the clip? I've got an 03 and the axle slipped out of the diff a couple of years ago. After some research I found that this is a common problem that they corrected in 05 and later. When I had my axle pulled out, I gave a little tweak to the clip so that it was just a little wider.... haven't had the axle fall out since.... but might not hurt to get a clip in my spare parts bin just in case.

The clip is still on. Just doesn't hold. I may have to try to do the same thing. I wonder how they fixed it for the '05's.

Just read how they fixed the '05's. Looks like they upgraded the companion shafts and clips. Looking into a jobber now to see if we can find a match.

If I recall correctly, they just made the clips bigger and/or the spot they slot into on the shafts bigger... is that about right?

There was a service bulletin posted about this where a kit with a thicker cir-clip is used on the axle. Some have been able to repair by bending the current clip into a bigger diameter. It is a known issue that was correct for the 05+.

I did find a part # (off an Aussie Mits forum) for the service bulletin (MR410469). I ordered it through Newmarket Mitsubishi, $6 each! I ordered new seals too. But of course they don't have the bearings anymore. Need to source them out now. Thanks

Post all the part numbers you find here for others who might have a diff leak in the future and need to find parts.

Just to update, next time I'm buying a used diff! Bearings all swapped, but they were back ordered ( 3 weeks). Then they showed up wrong! Replacements took a week. Had a shop put it all together, still howls. They suggest swapping the spider gear, but it's another 3 week wait and $500! Not sure what I'm doing next. Going to bring it home and triple check gear mesh and backlash. Only 6 weeks into this!

Also, I read on an Aussie forum that this issue may be caused by bad rear springs. So if I can get the noise out of the diff, I may be in the market. Suggestions?
