Differential cover

I was looking under my truck the other day and noticed that my differential cover is rotting away. Is this a common problem? I have a 05 F150 with the 8.8 rear end. Dealer says I can only buy from the dealer. Would like to get one that will last.

Interesting thread. I have seen this also, especially in the salted areas of the North. Is a stronger aftermarket cover worth it? Meaning are they truly stronger and therefore add to the strength of the differential housing? I know they cost more, but is it money well spent?

We had an Axle spreader at the shop. Never used it, but it was used to grab the axle pumpkin and warp the axle so the diff could be removed. Axles aren't as rigid as people think. So yeah, a strong solid plate over your axle opening deos make your axle stronger. Especially if your wacking it on rocks.

The good welded up fabbed ones also allow you to "shave" the pumpkin for better ground clearance without weakening the axle.

Common, looks about the same as the one that was on my 2003. If you want an alternative to the dealer go to your local auto parts store and pick up a stamped steel one like came from the factory. The Dorman one was $18 at Advanced Auto Parts. Probably won't come painted so you can prep it and use self etching primer so it lasts longer. Or go with an aftermarket one, the solidaxle one is $65 and freight. Might check craigslist, they show up ever once and a while

Looking into a couple of ones. Need to replace rear axle seals and my emergency brake set up at the sane time.
