DII Spark Plugs and Wires - ???

Hi,
Has anyone ever replaced DII plugs and wires?
What plugs and wires did you use, Genuine or other?

I have a misfire on #6 and my plan is to replace all the plugs and wires.
Genuine is expensive so I'm trying to figure out the aftermarket products.
I have heard people talk about Magnacore 8mm wires with Bosch Platinum +4 Plugs but I have also hear others say the Bosch platinum are no good.

Regardless I am looking for advise and proven solutions -- Thanks!

I found some instructions on how to replace the wires without removing the IM so hopefully it will go well.

Thanks again,
Brian

I use the ones we get from woldpac " Karlyn" for the most part and the standard bosch plugs. If it a truck that gets wheeled or sees a lot of water I prefer the Magnacore.

If you can sneak your hands back there to change the wires that is the fastest but most painful way. a good trick is to pull the front motor mounts and ease it down a bit.

Your miss fire may be a coil pack. I have seen them go bad. If you need anymore info feel free to shot me an email Justin@lucky8llc.com

Thanks,
I have heard of this SAI, Secondary Air Intake, correct? But I have no idea what it is.

Justin,
The code is only PO306 which translates into misfire in #6.
From what I understand there is a separate code if the coil pack is bad.
Is this correct?

So what I need now is proven solutions for brand combinations of plugs and wires and where to find them.

Thanks
Brian

The plugs you can get any Auto store. I can get you the wires for $60 plus shipping if you need them

Ill have to double check that code.

yes secondary air injection. there is a small electric blower that injects addtional air into the exh manifold to heat up the cat converters faster and thus reduce emmisions. it can come on when the engine cools down like at a stop sign or similar. it sounds like a small whining turbine when its on. there are two soleniods on each side of the motor that open to allow air into the mainifold. the thing about the plug wires is that the pipe that takes air from the blower on the RH side of the eng runs across the back of the engine above the coil packs to the LH side of the eng. thus obstructing access to the coil packs.

as far as wires and plugs go thats like asking boxers or briefs, dino or synth oil, etc. Bellybuttons and opinions; you know what they say. Mine is champions. I put RC12MC4 in my old DII a couple years ago but never did the wires before i sold it. I did put magnecore wires from roverconnection.com on my f-150 though. In both cases it was just PM and I noticed no huge significant gain, although the rover did idle a little smoother. I plan to use the same plugs and either magnacore or STI wires from roverconnection.com on my Range Rover resurection project in the very near future. this is because of price and convience on my part. truth be told i wouldn't be surprised if a set of decent quality wires from any auto parts store worked just fine. i dont know how much "performance" can be regained above what was there stock. obvisouly if you have a problem and that problem can be solved with wires there will be a big improvment but I am skeptical about performance gains from plug wires.

Its worth buying a wire puller and bend it to suit,if theres two stainless tubes crossing aboce the coil packs you'll know you have secondary air.

You will need to remove the tubes

removing the drivers side engine mount is such a pita don't bother you'll just add another 3 hrs to the job

Champion plugs-magnacor leads - Disco web is your best resource- If you can stand the attitude

Brian,

I use the bosch double platinums and I run the magnacore wires. I found this wire puller at pep boys and it worked like a charm.

I have SAI and was able to slip my hands down the backside while I lay my body across the top of the IM. And another thing, there is a metal pipe that runs along the back it may benefit you to unbolt it whcih would in turn free up a bit more space.

Thanks David,
I'm not looking to the aftermarket products for a performance gain but rather for economically reasonable pricing. It's tough to uderstand and agree with why a set of LR Genuine plug wires is $190 when I can get Magnacores for as low as $60 or even the ProLines from Rovers North for $50. With such a wide price range the challenge becomes finding the best value.

My primary concern is to replace the plugs and wires with a product that will not cause any further issues. From what I have read the wrong plugs or wires can be an issue.

Thanks, I really appreciate everyones input!

I just ordered a set of Magnacor 8mm wires.
There are a ton of options out there including Genuine.
After a bit of research and reading I decided on the Magnacor since they have been repeatedly proven as reliable for the application.

They arrive on Thursday and then the real fun begins!

For Spark Plugs I purchased a set of Champion Double Platinum #7318.
PepBoys showed them as the direct OE replacement plug from Champion.

LR Genuine Plugs are also made by Champion. Hows this for a comparison, LR Genuine Champion plugs $19.10 each at the dealer. Champion #7318 are $3.49.

Anyone ever used or heard anything about these #7318?

Thanks Justin,
I appreciate the offer on the STI wires, I was right on the edge and almost got them. What I read about them was all positive and they seem to be a proven solution. The amount of information and testimonials for the Magnacors is significant and made the difference.

Platinum plugs are huge mistake on rovers...they just dont like them.

I have removed them from lots of rovers with strange misfires that others could not figure out.

good old cheap copper cores changed more often and run with a .40 gap will make the Bosch motors run the best.

the gems motors will like the plugs a bit more closed .35 and the old distributor trucks love .45 but you will need to change the plugs alot more often but the cleaner running and smoother idle are well worth it. IMO

I wonder if the coil pack does not have enough amperage to get a good burn on the platinum plugs?
