Direct Access to Email Via Any Satellite Phone

A new app, OneMail, was just released that is the first of its kind. It allows you to send and receive emails from your Gmail account directly through a satellite phone data connection. The app downloads just the headers which requires a minimal amount of data, and then you can choose to download the complete emails you would like. The actual data transfer is highly compressed and optimized through a unique process developed by OCENS.

Previous to OneMail, you would need to have a completely separate specialized email client and account in order to use the low bandwidth data service on satellite phones, such as Iridium and Globalstar, to send and receive email. Now you can access your own Gmail account directly. Emails are always conserved on the server, so you never have to worry about downloading and deleting emails from the server while you are out on the road. In the near future, the app will expand to include many other email providers beyond Gmail. The app is available for Android and iOS and is compatible with the following satellite phones:

-Iridium GO!
-Iridium 9575, 9555, 9505a (requires the use of an Optimizer 102 or Iridium AxcessPoint)
-Inmarsat IsatPhone 1 and 2 (requires the use of an Optimizer 102)
-Globalstar 1700 and 1600 (requires the use of an Optimizer 102 or Globalstar 9600)
-Globalstar SatFi
-Any broadband satellite system such Inmarsat BGAN, Fleet Broadband, Iridium OpenPort, or KVH VSAT
-Cellular data connections
-Any other type of internet connection

This is a great question. What you are describing is text to email, and you are correct that the Inmarsat (as well as Iridium) phones have this capability built in. The difference is that text to email is purely an SMS function, which is convenient for quick messages since it comes right to your satellite phone, however you must use a unique Inmarsat email address and you are limited to 160 characters.

OneMail actually gives you direct access to your Gmail account, so that you are actually sending and receiving directly from your account. This means that you can download complete emails and send any length of email you would like directly from your own account. Because satellite phone data connections are so slow (1.2 kbps on the IsatPhone, 2.4 kbps on Iridium, and 9.6 kbps on Globalstar) accessing email conventionally is not possible due the amount of data overhead required. OneMail makes this possible because of it's unique design that strips out all of the overhead, and otherwise compresses, optimizes, and automates the email data transfer. It further optimizes the transfer by only downloading the headers initially and allowing you to pick and choose which emails to actually download instead of automatically attempting to download everything in your inbox. We have had a lot of customers ask specifically for this type of capability, because they wanted to direct access to their email account, which is what led us to develop this app.

I hope that this answered your question, but please let me know if you have any others.
