Dirt Bike trailer self build...done

Well I got fed up cadging lifts to the local dune area and the wifes in Venolandia visiting family so the welder came out

off road capable.....well I used Hilux leaf springs,,, does that count !


pictured here it only has the main, I'll be adding the seconds leaf's the day after next, as they won't take the weight of two bikes without going flat.

They are second or third hand and well used.

50mm x 3mm box main frame members
50mm x 1.2mm cross members

Axle is home made using 3" X 1/8" steel pipe and two off Toyota bolt on hubs
(corola rear type)

top is 3 mm chequer plate

ramp----I'm re-using my grating sand ladders

Its a two or one design, based on the size of a CRF 450X with a desert gas tank 18 ltrs !

Bike stands alone when slotted in for easy 1 person loading

The added springs should level it out a bit more

frame is 50 " wide , to use the 1 sheet of alu

slots are 36" centers apart, which is just over my handlebar and guard width.

I wanted two bike room but not a huge trailer so its paired down to the min.

construction wise I could have gone lighter box for the sides, but welding tin cans is a pain.

cost diference was $ 15 1.2mm V's 3mm.........

the tie down outrigger is 10" from the frame either side.

The bikes self support when being tied down, which when you load yourself is always a worry if there's no support

50" wide on the outside of the frame, inside, centerline? Must be outside, as I imagine you used a 48" wide piece of aluminum, with 1" frame exposed on either side?

Can you get 3 bikes on it? I've done it on a 4x8 trailer before. It's not fun, but I've done it. The middle one goes in backwards.

Nice. Might consider off setting the middle bracket rearward to offset handlebar conflicts if the deck cutout will allow it.

exactly bed width is 48 +1 +1

the middle slot is for solo bike use, If i needed to do 3 the middle bike gets reversed, and would need an adapter as the rear tyre won't slot in

On the smaller cargo trailer design I'm working on, I'm planningon a 4x6 box, with the tailgate left down when hauling bikes since they are usually about 7 feet long. One aspect I haven't figured out is the tie downs. When I put 2 bikes in my current trailer, the outside tiedowns from the handlebars are nearly vertical down, and don't work so well. I like the "wings" you built out the sides. But I'm not sure how I could incorporate that on a box trailer. If I did something, I'd like them to be removable. I wonder if I could put "wings" that slide into the top rail tube.

One thing you might want to think about: On my trailer, I have a 12" section of aluminum U-channel I can screw on the deck at the back. Keeps the back tires from sliding around.

The rear frame has tie downs either side, one strap looped around each tire
then ratcheted down and to the rear.

Keeps them down and inline, that way the deck stay's flat and usefull for other things.

I think as soon as you try and make a multi function trailer there are concesions that have to be made.

I mean realy just for two bikes a angle iron ladder would suffice....it would just look like crap..

I was modding for a friend as it had no front stops, no jocky wheel and the wheel stand's needed funnels in and widening

Ron, As far as your trailer goes, is it a utility trailer?
I understand what you need. I have a 4x8 utility trailer that I needed to haul 2 bikes. Sure it would work without my little contraption, but i added a couple pieces of angle and bolted it to the frame. It works.

Yeh, I had that scrap lying around. I didnt even bother to cut them to equal length just bolted them how the same distance out. Another tip is to drill a hole just big enough for your hooks to pass through-- also must be close to an edge, obviously. That'll keep you from coming loose!
