Disco as first vehicle..??

A couple of opinions on what has been said so far... The high COG worries usually come form those who have never had a Discovery on a steep incline. You have to remember that the frame, axles, and engine are rather low and carry the most weight as the body of the car is aluminum. If you are on something that a Discovery can't handle then you are probably out of your league as a teen and would have problems with any vehicle.

I'm basing my comments on the actual measured CG, and compared to the CG height of other vehicles. The Discovery CG is high, and it's not very wide.

In highschool my GF flipped her brand spankin' new Eddie Bauer edition Bronco II. that was much worse COG than a DII! luckily she was out with only bruising after a couple days in the hospital.

I had a `90 B2 back in the day. Tippy for certain, especially built on 33s. But even stock it was very noticeable.

For a 16yo Girl, I think the best thing you could do is get her an older Volvo station wagon, paint it flourescent pink and put a flashing yellow light on the top of it to warn others on the road of her presence.

Get her something simple and comletely non-flash. IMO I don't really think a top heavy 4wd truck is such a great first vehicle for a 16yo girl...

I'd think low COG, low power, boring looks, and alot of steel impact protection. Working off these standards we see that the perfect vehicle for her would be a 1990's Buick LeSabre. http://memphis.craigslist.org/cto/1610471228.html
Take out the vanity mirrors, install a breathalizer and an in-car camera system like the cops have... Perfect set-up for a 16yo girl.

Cheers

My kids will end up driving a Rover, but for different reasons,
1. They are slow, I know they will drive fast, but the top speed is slow compared to anything else.
2. They use a lot of gas, I want them to have to work to get enough gas to drive.
3. I also want them to know how to fix things. I am surprised at the number of people that can't change a tire or oil.

I know, I have some different ideas, but growing up on a farm and now living in town, things are so different.

Turbo charger rice burners are fun, but I don't think teens have the self-control for that.

She is probably less likely to abuse something she loves than something she hates. Couldn't you find something that needs work (jeep) that she would take interest in and appreciate? A 2.5L will perform on the trail better than on the highway and a soft top has a lower cog (glass is really heavy). As a teenager I would drive anything I had as fast as it could go, I was fortunate to never have crashed. I sold the 87 Toyota tercel my parents gave me to buy a VW van. I loved it, babied it and obviously never sped again. I not only wanted to learn how everything worked but needed to just to keep going. My oldest is 12 but I already have asked what he might be interested in just to get him interested. I want him to see the time/money in preparing his ride while being care full not to loose his interest. How is your daughter with her stuff? Does she loose or break her phone? Does she let you know if the computer is broken, does she need a lesson or deserve more of a reward? The most practical answer might not be the best, consider all the factors like her friends and the road conditions where she drives like snow or mountains etc. Just my $0.02

For those suggesting big ugly boat cars.. I can see where you're coming from, but quite honestly I look at cars like that and say "why the hell would anyone drive that, much less buy it in the first place..

Lemme give you a run down of what I've owned over the years.. Only one or two could be considered a boring vehicle..
72 Chevy PU
86 Chevy S-10 Lowrider
90 Pontiac Firebird GTA
94 Saturn Coupe
93 Chevy Silverado
86 Chevy Silverado
96 Ford Mustang Convertable
96 Isuzu Rodeo
04 Mazda RX-8
06 Hummer H3
09 Dodge Challenger
86 Suzuki Intruder
53 Harley FL
79 Harley FLH
89 Harley FLHTC
00 Kawasaki Nomad

Boring, ugly vehicles just aren't in the bloodline..

The only one I can say that's ever been abused would be the H3.. But IMHO it's sorta designed to be beat a bit.. I've loved almost all of those vehicles and have never settled on something that wasn't an interesting vehicle Well, except for the Rodeo, was looking for an Xterra, the Nissan dealer would bend and said I'd never get a vehicle at that price for what I was willing to spend a month. I stopped next door and bought the Rodeo w/ a higher sticker for $100 less a month than the Nissan dealer would deal on the Xterra.. After I went back to rub it in the Nissan salemans face I was walking back to the Rodeo and said to myself "WTH? Look what I'm driving now"..

Anyroads.. I've rarely settled on a boring car, not gonna force my daughter to..

Found it the other day.. Looks like a good deal on a good truck.. Just a bit to much coin.. If I got her that I already know I'd never sell anything off of it.. She wouldn't let me..

So.. I figure $3900 aint to bad.. I start checking on insurance.. Apparantly insurance companies are expecting to have to completely write the Rover off in under two years.. Plugged in the numbers with my daughter and the Rover.. Increase from $1300 a year without he and the rig, to $3700 with 'em..
