Discovery Sport vs. Grand Cherokee Overland vs. 4Runner TRD

Hi Stefan,

Have you driven a TRD Pro? For a "truck" it's pretty posh. I'm actually pretty uncomfortable driving luxurious cars, so I had to get over that when I bought mine. Of course, to me heated seats is luxury. :) The suspension is unreal on washboard roads, and it still rides pretty well on the highway.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of the three models you are looking at.

Leather Heated seats are 90's luxury. The TRD Toyota is about as base trim as it gets when it comes to interior, even the 4runner 'Limited' is still a Toyota on the inside. The Grand Cherokee and the LR4 are on a whole other level for comfort, gadgets, and features.

I'm a big Rover fan, but my mom and girlfriend both just got new Grand Cherokees and WOW. Mom's is a 2014 2wd Overland package with the Hemi. The girlfriend's is a 2015 4wd Overland package with quad-tracII, but with the small V6.

Even though only one is on airbags they both ride and handle identical....just smooth. The V6 in the 4wd is very responsive and has more than enough power in my opinion. The Hemi V8 is a-whole-nother beast. The power the thing has is amazing and it sounds so pretty with your foot deep in the pedal.

I haven't driven the LR4, but I've spent some time in the passenger seat and it's very nice but interior styling makes me feel like you get more bang for your buck in the jeep.

The 4Runner in my opinion is anything but easy to look at. I was about to test drive one when shopping for the girlfriend a couple weeks ago before buying the jeep, and having a long torso my head felt way too close to the roof. Not sure what it was but I just felt too crammed in the 4Runner to even put the keys in it. I was expecting the same comfort as our 2005 4Runner and it just wasn't there at all.

Go get behind the wheel of a Grand Cherokee Overland with the Hemi and you'll wonder why you considered the others.

^ Yes, GX wss my first thought. Reliability but should have a number of nice lux interior features. I'd expect maybe ventilated seats? I find it amazing you can option an LR4 to $70k+ but no seat ventilation, hardly even an acceptable seat in the first place. The LR4 has become NOT a good value in comparison to similar priced vehicles.

In fact, if you option an LR4 to $70+...I do not know why you wouldn't consider negotiating a new Land Cruiser to $71 and realizing you got a heck of a value in the LC that the LR simply cannot deliver.

Jeep GC...no way in hell. Way too many issues I've read about from other owners. Might as well have more fun in a Land Rover!

Really? My dad had a 98.5 (I think) off road pack... 32s, rear locker, tire carrier, 5 spd. I loved that truck. If I was a little older when he traded it in I would have taken it. 90k miles without a single issue.

Money talks. Or in this case lack of sales and profits. Mitsubishi US market share fell to 0.5 percent. There were rumors of them exiting the US market. They have turned it around but had to end sales of the Montero in 2006.

Years ago I looked at one and found it cheap, too small and lacking power. In summary they were not competitive.

Why are you all bringing Mitsubishi's into the mix?

OP already stated that the TRD Toyota wasn't luxury enough and now you want to talk about a Mitsubishi where leather isn't even standard equipment?

Because the Montero is returning to the US this year?

My new to me 1998 Montero full size blows the doors off of my 99 d2. No comparison. The only thing the d2 has is the looks. And is slightly wider.

The 04-06 only came with leather in the full size montero, the marketing department sucked and they sold too many of them overseas so they didn't have many to sell here.
The new model looks like a sport. Has a solid rear axle too. Remember the gx is a base model prado in the rest of the world, with added Luxury type stuff. The discovery sport is not aimed at that third world survival market the toy, mits, and nissan/infiniti qx80(?) are.
I would take a jag powered l322 over any lr4, discovery sport or evoque. Heck even over a toyota or Lexus for any light expedition type trails every once in a while. Our 06 was the most reliable vehicle we have ever owned. More so than the 4Runner, discos, p38's, explorer, and mazdas we have owned over the years. I put a starter and a battery in it in 70k miles. And brakes too. Never left us stranded and was very comfortable.

Just find one that compromises where you want it to.

Lexus GX and the Rover play in the same general game. Jeep GC is the runt. The 4runner is the 4x4 tool looks ugly not very refined but is the best tool in the box. You want comfort and reliability that leaves the GX.

How heavy is the trailer? Pending trailer weight maybe your thinking about this all wrong?
