awaiting the delivery of my new ARB fridge/freezer, i decided to install two (always on) 12 volt outlets in the cabin using the existing AC plate.
tools needed:
- standard screw driver
- crimpers
- rachet with 6in extension and 10mm socket
- 7/8 in drill bit (i used a 3/4in cuz thats all i had)
- sharpie
- wire cutters
- 2 yellow ring connectors
I picked up 2 outlets at the walmart for about $6 a piece...
(borrowed this pic from a fellow member..thx Kai)...
1. pop the AC outlet plate from the side wall of the cargo area...unplug the wiring harness
2. using the outlet as a template, take the sharpie and mark on the plate where you want to drill the 2 holes...
3. once the holes are drilled, mount the outlets to the plate...push in the outlet from the front and screw the outer piece on the back of the plate
4. while the AC plate if off, remove the grounding screw (10mm socket)...you cant miss it...there is a big white wire going to it...you will need to use an extension to get to it...
using the 2 ground wires that are provided, crimp an end on each one and bolt them to the ground point along with the white wire...
you can see the 2 ground wires have yellow ends..
5. remove the plate that sits right below the Sub (if you have one)....
IMPORTANT: YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE SUB TO REMOVE THE PLATE
using a standard screw driver, carefully pry at the bottom of the plate in 2 or 3 spots...the plate will just pop off...unplug the wiring harness that sits below the sub...unwrap the right side of the harness right behind the plug...you will need to expose about 1.5 to 2inches of the blue/white wire..
this wire is an always-hot wire...
6. take the 2 red wires supplied with the 12v outlets....since we will be splicing only once to the blue/white wire, we will splice the 2 red wires first using a blue clamp...feed the red wires from the AC outlet opening to the wiring harness under the sub... using another blue clamp, splice the red wire to the blue/white wire..see pic below..
7. connect the red and black wires to the back of the 12v outlets...red to the brass color, black to the silver..
8. pop the AC plate back
9. plug the wiring harness back together
10. replace the plate
VOILA!!! C'est complis!!
I want to give some KUDOS to Volley (aka Shaneeka) from the fjbruisers...she was a great help with this install...
