DIY pop up mechanism

I have looked through a number threads, so forgive me if I missed one that included this.

Could you use something like the Happijac Jacks to lift your roof? Why not have those serve two purposes. Just flip them back around a remount them when you want to take the camper/topper off.

Given your roof is built strong enough, you could also lift whatever is on it without any issues forgoing any need to remove cargo like you might on a Project M.

Please feel to ********** me with a dead salmon if I am way off base here for some technical/engineering reason.

I think I need a bigger truck!
I don't see why not? They are heavy and bulky to move around, and you would have to figure out a way to mount them. But with a little time and effort nothing is really impossible.

If I were to do it again I would go the linear actuator route and get a good set of 4 with all of the controllers and mounts. So many options now for decent high-er speed units. Plus they are generally pretty light.

Interested to see what others have to say about this?

having built my own camper jacks i can advise that they will be heavy and bulky - the lead screws will need to be long and large diameter to cope with the weight of the full camper, but at the end of the day they are just big linear actuators and anything is possible. Personally i would think that the lightness of the pop top would be better suited to some kind of scissor mechanism with a couple of much smaller, lighter actuators and gas struts to preload the mechanism
