I did a search but nothing obvious came up....

Anyone done a DIY fishing pole rack/holder for their vehicle?

There are plenty for sale but I know I can make one for about $5 in parts.

I'll be doing this lil project next weekend.

Wanted to feel everyone out for advice before I did.

Will post pics..

For a wagon, you can string parchute cord between the grab handles on either side of the vehicle. If you're carrying several rods leave enough slack in the cord so you can loop around each one to keep them from "clanging" into each other. This might cost less than $5 :sombrero:......probably wont work with your Frontier.

I'm thinking about away to carry fishing rods safe on my truck but still out of the way. The idea I came up with was to get some PVC pipe (Large enough diameter to fit the rod and reel into), cap one end permantly with a solid cap, and put a thread on cap on the other end and paint the wole assmeblage so it looks decent. You just wrap the rod in a padding material (Styrofoam, blanket, whatever), put the rod in the pipe, seal it, and mount it to the roof rack on you truck.

that would be HUGE!!!

diameter would have to be ~ 6 inches or more....length be (conservatively) 7 feet......

I have a couple of Fenwicks, they aren't real high dollar, but my Grandfather left them to me. I picked up a couple of commercially made cases for 5 bucks at our local Goodwill. With that said, I have also built PVC cases for rods as well. Thin wall pipe works well and so do Cardboard Map/Shipping tubes.

I have a few ideas I could share but would need to know:

Do your rods break down, and how long are the sections? Do you want complete coverage of the rod and reel? Will the reel be stored attached?
Or are you just going to hang the rod and reel together exposed?

Personally, I know what I want. Now it's just a matter of making it.
If you can imagine this, I want what is in the link below made out of PVC (actually will probably be conduit because it's 1/4 the price) and mounted at a 45 degree angle in some manner to the utilitrac on the largest surface of our beds.

I fish once piece poles...mostly spinners, a couple baitcasters...all of which are one piece and between 5' and 8'. I have 3 St Croix's, 2 G Loomis, and 1 Bass Pro.

Okay, Something, I thought you meant as something (No Pun Intended) to keep the rods safe while you were driving (Down the road, to camp, etc.). If your looking for something bumper-mounted, I can't really think of anything that isn't the obvious. But I can say to notch the top of the pipes so the rods don't twirl.

Some ideas:
