DIY Rod Rack/Holder

I carry mine rods in their cases, stowed in the drawer system in the truck. When flying, I use a HUGE bomb-like PVC pipe - 10" diameter and about 4' long. It has rope handles, and can hold about 6 fly rods, two breakdown trolling rods, and a couple trolling reels. All my fly reels and other gear are in a boat bag.

I do know some 'steelhead bums' who carry rods (fully set up) in a rack attached to the inside ceiling of their Suburban - pretty simple - just a rod with velcro tabs to hold their rods.

I use a Yakima snowboard/ski rack. I left the front alone but on the rear one I removed the top rubber lip and glued on 1/2" neoprene strip. This allows me to fasten rod butts from 1/2" to 2". Un-modded, it was too tight.

In the picture there are about 8 rods ranging from 5 weights to 9 weights, 9 ft to 10 ft. There's almost $10000 in rods and reels up there so you know it's fastened well. Probably could withstand a moderate collision.

I have your solution gentleman...

PistolPete's Ultimate Fly Fishing Rod Transporter!

just made this for my Toyota Tundra because I wanted to carry my fly rods (9ft) assembled so I don't have to break them down when puddle/stream jumping....saves time....and to have them COMPLETELY protected ...there are times we go down trails and it avoids any low hanging limbs, overpasses, signs or road debris from hitting the poles....and my buddies have made their own bamboo rods ($$$)....I posted this over at www.tundrasolutions.com and www.tacomaworld.com to help everyone out...it is a real cheap BY VIABLE option....oh yeah did I mention it is completely lockable so you don't have to worry about leaving the truck???

I would attach the detailed modification/assembly procedure but its too large for the forum rules....so go to the link above or I can email it to you!!!

I use two bungie cords at the front and back of my Tacoma strung across the bed. I put the rod ends between each set of bungie cords, this way the rods are not bouncing around in the truck and it leaves the floor of the bed open for other gear.

well the trial run was a BIG HIT...all my buddies LOVED the transporter!!! it saved us alot of time while "puddle jumping" from stream to stream....

note: I know there are alot of ways to carry rods and this method was chosen for several reasons

1-protection from road debris,weather,other bed components(like luggage)
2-allowing my Retrax bed cover to remain FULLY closed to protect luggage from weather
3-security-to allow rods to be locked and left unattended on the truck without fear of being stolen

Pistol Pete,
I just downloaded your pdf. I will be building some of these up for our cross-country trip this summer. I'll adapt it a bit for bass rods and reels.

Currently, my setup is extremely simple, but works great with our vehicle for transport. It's just simple velcro strips that I attach the pole to the Oh ******** handles. It actually keeps several poles tucked up and out of the way very quickly and securely inside the car. It might just work with our RAV4, but I assume it would work well with other vehicles.

yeah we thought about the spin casting reels this weekend and all we came up with is either a much much deeper box (prohibitive), cut another hole in the lid portion and attach more piping to allow for the extra length of the butt in spin casting rods as compared to the non-existent butt on a fly rod....or god forbid cut down the butt length on your spin casting rods:eek:

I'm currently prototyping some holders for the spin casters in the bed of the truck that would allow them to be stored up and out of the way of cargo in the bed...no need for covers, cases locks etc ...just some mounts...because I have a locking rolling bed cover (Retrax)

I've added a means to secure our spin casters (in addition to the Ultimate fly rod transporter posted earlier) to the truck to keep them up and out of the way of crushing luggage using some scrap IPE decking and aluminum stock I had left over. Works great and best of all I did NOT have to permanently modify the truck by drilling holes!

it has a 4 rod capacity right now but could be drilled to add two more rods for 6 or even another IPE wood bracket coming from the opposite direction to add a few more poles if necessary.

This is what I did in my FJ . I use velcro around the front handle at drivers headliner area to hold the tips and the quick fist clamps at the butts and it works great. Im going to make one for the other side too.Everything tucks behind my fridge /freezer along with the extinguisher / mag light and first aid kit.

I did a search but nothing obvious came up....

Anyone done a DIY fishing pole rack/holder for their vehicle?

There are plenty for sale but I know I can make one for about $5 in parts.

I'll be doing this lil project next weekend.

Wanted to feel everyone out for advice before I did.

Will post pics..
Yep 5 frogskins is what you think now but in a few weeks you'll be in 25. I've been here w/ my xj and nothing cool ever works out.
