This is a good question that is easily answered.
When you are talking SLR's, the camera (called a body, or digital back), is really the least important part, or certainly the least permanent part of the equation. As has been demonstrated and stated above, a PNS can take a good photo given all the right factors, but when you are using a good lens, it's just far superior. The SLR bodies give you access to amazing lenses. And a lens does not really "age" in the way that technology products do. I fully intend to replace my trusty 20D someday, but I highly doubt I'll ever replace my lenses. So buy a cheap body that meets your minimum needs, but buy the best glass you can, and it will meet your needs for years to come.
