Do you crumple or fold?

Do you fold your tent before putting it in the stuff sack or do you just jam it in there?


As I see it, just stuffing it in will prevent the same fibers from getting folded constantly, hopefully reducing wear at any single point. But it's also much easier to get the tent to fit in the sack if you fold and roll it up tightly.

What's the best way put your tent away?

With canvas you want to fold/roll it up or takes twice the space, with nylon you can stuff it pretty easily and roll it after you get home.

This is what I've always done, except it goes into a lightweight cotton laundry bag loosely stuffed rather than hanging up.

This is generally what I do as well. Have a friend who is a big fan of the "jam it all in there any way you can" method.

Though I am liking the idea of hanging it up at home for long term storage. I generally make sure it's clean and dry then roll it back up and put it in the bag.

The common wisdom with most manufacturers is to sort of fold and stuff. The idea being to fold, but not in any repeated pattern. It's probably more important how you store your tent. Mine are usually stored in cotton pillow cases in a closet.

I long ago began to stuff, rainfly first, then tent, then footprint in order I will need to lay them out. I have had no trouble, but I do store the poles and stakes outside the tent bag-think if you put everything in the bag you could not stuff with the the poles already in there.

I fold tent and fly in a random, sloppy way, then place them into a size-small but spacious Eagle Creek duffle bag(top loading), along with all other needed tent parts, except the stake-driving hammer. Since my tents are used for car camping, there is no need to bother with stuff sacks. The duffle is stored with the top zipped open(for air circulation) in a closet at home

fold, roll, and stuff while out. I set them up at home, sweep them out, wipe down all sides with damp cloth, air dry, then store it long term in the sack. Never owned a canvas tent.
