Dodge Key Question

So when I went to visit my parents over the 4th of july,I somehow lost one of my dodge key/fobs. I hate running around with only one key and it turns out that these keys are chipped which is good and bad. Good that it can't be stolen with a screwdriver like my buddies F-350, but bad because just a chipped key without the buttons is $70. The stealership wanted $250 for a new key with buttons.:Wow1:

Anyone have any words of wisdom that will help keep my wallet from deflating?

Its a ripoff, but I doubt you'll do much better elsewhere. The key online is over $100, and then you need to either have the dealer program it or have two working keys so you can program it yourself at home (but since you are down to one key, you're screwed - they did that so that someone can't make copies if you just lend them the vehicle with one key).

The keys suck too - I did some research (had constant problems with the fob part with both of my Dakota's keys) and basically the quality control on the circuit board is crap.

Our Dakota came with only one remote key. I ran into the same problems in finding a reasonably-priced additional one.

Found these guys Remotes and Keys dot Com. Remote was $29.00 plus $12.26 S/H. Had a 12-month warranty and there was absolutely no trouble following the instructions for programming the key.

X2 above. I hated my FOB's. They felt like McDonald's quarter pounders in my pocket. I bought three chipped keys on E-Bay and made my own. The stock FOB's are sitting in the drawer.

You're at the mercy of the dealer, but they should be able to make you a chipped spare key. With that and the FOB,you should be able to make a couple of chipped E-Bay keys. Instructions are in your owner's manual. My E-Bays are going on five yrs old now.

The above site does not show a key for '07 Dodges. But if you enter the FCC ID code you'll find a bunch that will work. I didn't go back and look, but I believe that one of those is the '06 Dodge key.

They also have some cool padlocks that self set to your car key the first time it's inserted. That might be handy for locking gas cans or something.
