Does a DIY awning need a full frame or just a couple of poles?

In a moment of impulse buying at Menards I bought a 6x8 tarp and 2 Mr. LongArm poles. I was thinking that perhaps I could mount one side of the tarp on my jeep and just guy out 2 poles on the other end for a basic awning. I've seen several like this. Do they work well?

It seems that many of the manufactured options provide a square frame around the tarp to keep it from flapping. I suppose I could do that with 3 more of the same poles.

Anyway, I needed a way to mount the tarp to my poles. Here is try #1:

I'm thinking that some paracord and possibly small carbiners will work with these. Thoughts?

Good idea - let us know how the prototype works out.

Suggestion: Use shock cord loops on your tie-outs to prevent the snapping and pulling from yanking the grommets out of the tarp.

I have used the cheapo Coleman spare nested tube tent poles you can get for ~$10 at Wally World before in a very similar arrangement. They have a spike at the top for inserting in the tarp grommet. You then attach your guy line hoop over the spike to capture the tarp. I always have a couple in my trailer with a spare tarp in the event I want to extent the area of my vehicle mounted awning.

I have used the same style poles and there is a threaded plastic sleeve that allows you to add paint roller extension handle to it. I used the wood extensions and cut them about 3" long drilled the center, screwed in a lag bolt into the end of the wood and then cut bolt head off. This gives you a nice pin to slip thru the grommet, tie the rope to the pin above the tarp and all is secure. Dave
