When I had a 1997 Disco I had a problem with the speedo leading to rough idling and rough driving. The speedo was jumping rapidly something like 0-20-10-5-0-40-30-0 when idling and when driving.

I fixed the problem by replacing the speed transducer (Land Rover calls it the VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor) which is located on the transmission.

Alternator it is. I dug the voltmeter out (yeah, had one, had a hard time finding it in the shed though!)

I haven't had much time to dink around with it yet but thanks for all the advice and tips. Glad to hear that feedback on the Bosch reman units, I will avoid those. I was going to see if it would be worth it to find a local shop that could rebuild it to save some $$.

I was out of town for work till this weekend so I just got around to addressing this. I picked up a 120 amp Denso unit which other than one different sized connector was a direct bolt in. The unit wasn't cheap but sounds like it was a better option than those reman Bosch units. Thanks again for the help. The Rover is ready for a trip to the swell this weekend now!
