Donahoe Coilovers with IVD coating

I was talking with Jason at Wheelers the other day about DR coilovers. He mentioned that you can order them with IVD coating, a high salt resistant coating that allows for little or no corrosion. A $100 extra.

Has anyone gotten coilovers with this and/or is it a worthwhile additional investment? Curious.

The Donahoes with the IVD coatings have only been out less than a year so it's really difficult to give a complete answer - only time in the real world will tell. They are only slightly different cosmetically then the regular coilovers - otherwise identical. The big difference is that with the coating you should still be able to adjust the coilover even after years of winters. There are examples of coilovers (Donahoe and others) of rusting to the point where the adjustable collars are totally seized, but I have not personally heard of or seen confirmed cases of any Donahoes IVD coated or non-coated coilovers becoming unusable or breaking due to rust.

Personally, I waited and waited until the IVD was released before getting my set. For my climate, the extra level of protection is simply required and worth the extra money. Just like buying some extra insurance on a vehicle you intend to keep.

Hope that helps.

Just wrap the threads of your coilovers with some vinyl tape to keep the threads clean and corrosion-free. It's worked for me on a couple of vehicles.

I had this posted in another thread, but it's worth re-posting here. For the same reasons as mountainpete, I've been waiting for the Donahoes to come out withthe additional corrosion protection. Our climate is extremely hard on vehicles between the road salt, sea salt and fluctuating temperatures there is not much you can do to avoid it. Anytime you work on a vehicle, we take the time to pre-soak everything with penetrating oil before starting then on re-assembly we use lots of Never Seez. As a point of reference here is what my OME coils look like after only 21 months of service!

For your information, the powder coating had all but flaked off due to rust in the above picture. I'm currious to hear how the Donahoes have made out after using them in a corrosive envrionment. In my mind, it does not get any worse that our climate.

Cheers ,
