I know width is something to be concern with when doing overland . What about length of truck ? (wva , smokies) . I want to be able to reach the small streams on wva , nc , tenn border .

All depends on what yer comparin' it to, I was driving a Dodge Quad cab now I got a Taco dcab with a 6' bed, it fit my needs. The longer wb can have it's advantages as well as disadvantages, same with the shorter wb. Everybody's gonna have an opinion about what works best & why, sort out what works best for you then adapt and overcome.

So need to figure out how much to raise the truck to get over or around the obstacles .

For my setup 32"-33" will work just fine. A good bit of over & through obstacles has more to do with line selection. Have a good spotter or know your vehicle really well then pick your way through.
Big tire / big articulation allows for point and shoot driving for the most part. However even the "Rubicon" has been concurred running 33's and lockers with an experienced spotter.

Gotta think about the super small spectrum of trails that won't allow the passage of a vehicle, because it's 18" longer.

My DCSB wheelbase is already too long for my liking on the trails in my neck of the woods. It's worth it to carry the family and gear. But my preference would be shorter for ease of maneuverability. Just my $0.02

What he said....
If you're looking to go places for the sake of going there, he's spot on. If you're looking to complete some trail to no where so you can say you did, or say that you "hung with the Jeeps all day", then yes, it would be an unwieldy barge. Do a thurough test drive of one- park it in a few busy lots. If you can hit a parking spot in it, you can probably wheel it, too.

I've got a DC tundra, it's a barge but with kids it seems to be full everytime we go out so if I have to be a little careful through the tight stuff that's fine with me. Sliders, skids and bumpers and even the long ones will go a lot of places
