Doug,

I love your interviews. Can I suggest three other topics?

Favorite destination:
Least favorite destination:
Most memorable person met on route:

More stuff about their experiences along with gear info...

Pete,

These are fantastic suggestions. They are among the topics we spend all of our time talking about anyway... ;)

Regarding destinations, among the southbound overlanders there was a general consensus that Central America was not worth it. The experience was described variously as "edgy, people too macho, gunslingers, tense, hassle, not that interesting, etc." This was always in the context of comparison with SA, which was usually described as "tranquilo" in comparison. We have not been to CA so I cannot offer any personal comments in that regard.

Cecelia loved Asia and is considering returning there. She did not enjoy Thailand, in part because she went from the undeveloped Laos/Cambodia to the very developed and tourist-thick Thailand. She shared the usual perception of India as a place that is very intense and one that you either love or hate.

One common theme of advice is to stay on the tracks on the great salar in Bolivia. We've met at least four overlanders who broke through and spent days trying to get out.

Jurgen broke through a bridge in the Pantenal because his truck's track is wider than the common Hilux width bridge traffic. (Wolf pointed this out as an advantage we would have in Bolivia and the Amazon basin because the Fuso has such a narrow track and can run in the same general tracks as the dominant Hilux traffic.)

Most memorable person is a great question. We'd have to spend quite a bit of time considering that one ourselves. How about most memorable person this week? :)

Great information, thanks. We are currently in the process of deciding what kind of overland vehicle we want for our next overland trip. We have just completed our 3rd overland trip in Africa which we did in a Land Cruiser which has roof top tent. For our next vehicle however we do want to be able to sleep and cook inside so right now we asking ourselves lots of questions of what we need and what we want. Tough decision, knowing what kind of overland vehicle we should build.
