Maybe they were inspired by the Expeditions West journey to Ultima Thule (documented here http://www.expeditionswest.com/arctic_ocean/). Or maybe it was a slow day in the office. A couple of independent journalists decided it would be fun to drive from Whitehorse, Yukon Territories, Canada to Inuvik and then on to Tuktoyaktuk, the most northerly community in North America that you can reach by car.
Mercedes wanted to see how their Smart Car would handle the brutal winter conditions, and a plan was formed. The team drove about 1000 miles in five days, crossing frozen gravel tracks and ice roads in below zero conditions. The cars did fine, even starting without a block heater after a night at 35 degree below zero.
