Driving From Vail to Dos Cabos

I'm new to the forum and wanted to say Hi! I live in Vail CO and May '10 my friend and I are taking a surf trip all the way down Baja to Cabo! I've just started outfitting my truck and have a SS 1.2 on the way! LOTS AND LOTS of things to do in a couple months so you'll be hearing some FNG questions haha. See ya!

Sounds like an awesome trip. I'm thinking about trying to make it up your way around May this year if I can swing some time off work. How many days are you going to have for your trip? I've always wanted to surf baja, don't think I'm going to make it out there until I get out of school though. If you decide you ever want to come surf some of the east coast best let me know.

I loved the winter surf around Todos Santos! Killer destination.

don't believe the hype. felt safe the whole trip and gas was plentyful.

Welcome to ExPo, mosupernak !

Sounds like a fun surf trip! Baja yields all types of waves around each corner of the road if there's a good swell. I grew up surfing in the LA area and also lived/surfed in coastal north county San Diego most of my life before moving up to the Pacific NW (cccold sssurf tttrips...). I've also spent many years traveling/surfing in Baja. It's a great adventure with a "wild west" feel to it even after all these years.

Are you guys taking a couple boards each ? The month of May can be a little "hit 'n miss" down there as far as surf conditions, but six weeks should score you some kind of waves. Also, don't forget to take a fullsuit for Northern Baja. I'm jealous! I havn't been on a Baja surf trip in a couple of years due to the obvious turmoil in Mex.

Sounds like "vanderpooch" recently had a fun, trouble free trip. Although fuel is very plentiful down there these days, don't forget a jerry can or two if you like to explore off the beaten track on the coast. It's surprising how much gas you can burn up chasing waves around every corner...

I'm sure there are quite a few members on here that would be more than happy to lend their help and expert knowledge with any of your questions.
Post up some pics when you can, and show us what kind of rig you are outfitting.
Good luck and have fun,

WS

Baja trip...

Try not to make your truck "too blingy", especially if you have your surfboards displayed. I would gas up at the border and not stop until you are a good 200mi south of the border to avoid problemas...
We have carried down everything from pencils and little pencil sharpeners for kids, to bringing old Playboys down for the federalies working the checkpoints!
Have fun!

x2 on that advice. The dirtier the vehicle the better also.
Surf stickers, old surf tshirts, and trunks can go a long way too.
There are a few small groups of kids in some coastal areas that are totally surf stoked. Just might keep them or their friends from breaking into your rig when you out surfing too.

Don't forget Mexican auto insurance and you tourist cards at the border before you cross...:sombrero:
