Duluth Pack Canvas Bedroll

Duluth makes excellent products, as does Butler (Butler is more specialist/hand made quality). RedOxx would probably make a nice one too if you asked.

It's cool and all,but the idea of paying $330 bucks so I can sleep under the stars when I have a RTT makes it a no go for me.

What are your goals with this bedroll? For 7 lbs I'd rather have a down sleeping bag and an insulated Exped mattress like the Synmat 12 (3 lbs. 1 oz). Far more comfort and warmth.

After getting to look at one in person, think I'm going to fabricate my own. Not much to them really. I've got a decent commercial-grade sewing machine and an ample supply of canvas, so think I'll give it a go. It'll make a good project for a stormy winter's day.

I should be one to talk...I buy a lot of pointless stuff and I wouldn't be buying that bed roll for over 300 bucks. I love it, I think its a sweet set up and I'd like one for my self but I'd rather spend 300 on a Duluth or Frost River pack before I bought a bed roll. At least a pack can be used for many activities, last a life time and you can have many fond memories traveling with a pack. A bed roll? I love it but its just too pricey for what it is.

Just my 2 cents...

Goals are to have a rugged and easy way to "make my bed" each night in the rear of the Jeep. I have the warmth and comfort issue taken care of with a zero degree down bag atop three wool blankets and a buffalo robe. The problem lies in keeping it clean and organized while still being easy to lie out at the end of the day. A bedroll will allow me to do just that with a tough, canvas cover that I can simply roll up and slide out of the way in order to carry traps and possibles during fur season and my tools/equipment for working and research the rest of the year. I have a totally different set-up for the times I need to pack in or space/weight requirements are an issue; such as in aircraft or small watercraft. This is strictly for the vehicle.

I agree with you on the cost; which is why I decided to go ahead and make my own after examining one up close and personal. Not much to them at all and an easy project to knock out one day this winter. Frost River packs are outstanding! I have three that have been constant companions for going on 5 years; canoe trips, the trapline, field research, used while teaching courses, etc. I spare them no punishment and all three are no worse for the wear other than a little staining, soiled leather, and a few nicks and pulls to the canvas. In my opinion, the Frost River packs are heads and tails a higher quality product over the newer Duluth Pack offerings. However, the 1960's vintage and earlier Duluth Packs are extremely well-made; which is one reason that even in used/worn condition they demand a premium.

It's the glamping version of a $25 canvas tarp folded over....
