During a build - containing costs

As we all know these things can get very expensive

Sometimes there is multiple solutions to a project task. Spending a great amount of time with planning so the best and cost effective implementation is the goal

Examples are front seats replacements. There are ready made high end seats for $1000 ++ each. I learned the middle row mini van seats in leather with arm rests are less than half the price.

Examples are a drinking water systems. The RO systems are much more expensive than the 5 gallon drinking water bottles you can buy at almost any grocery store.

Examples are auxiliary fuel tanks. Early GM and FORD new fuel tanks are a saving of 75%. And they are mounted between the frame rails anyway.

Examples are bull bar winch bumpers. Careful planning can save 70%

Great topic! I too try to avoid the overland tax whenever possible. Facebook Marketplace and junkyards have been a gold mine of savings for my project.

I'm currently struggling with the spare tire solution. Since these big tires in most cases require custom storage solutions, the 1000's of dollars spent seems a waste. It was my idea to tow a TOAD (Suzuki Samurai) for many reasons (I want to carry kayaks). And the back of the TOAD can be a place to store the trucks spare tire.

Proper prior planning prevents pis# poor performance.

I have been buying stuff I might possibly need for unknown projects for years, as an example, I picked up 50' 30 amp electrical cord for an RV camper two years ago at a garage sale, didn't own a travel trailer or an "RV". Last week bought a travel trailer to fit the electrical hookup. Saved money!
