E-Scooters. A really good van camping accessory.

Hey guys, figured I would throw this out there.

You know those rental scooters that are popping up everywhere? Like Bird / Lime / Skip / etc...? They will go 20mph and have a pretty good range. Usually around 15 mile range.

They're great for ripping to the bathroom at the campground, or parking and urban exploring in places that don't have them for rent.

They sell consumer versions that fold. Most have very good range, cheaper than a One Wheel, don't take up the room of a bicycle.

Here are the consumer versions, then I'll show you a trick to get one under $100.

Xiaomi M365 / M365 Pro. $399 / $599. These are usually Bird scooters. Also the Lyft scooters and a couple others.

Segway Ninebots. ES2 $560 / ES4 $799. These are usually Lime scooters and some Birds.

Now, for the good stuff. These scooters are impounded by police a lot. They're also abandoned when out of the pickup range for the people that charge them. Police auctions, they run for about $20 a piece. The abandoned ones, well they're technically free. Depending on how you look at it.

The Bird Xiaomi M365 scooters are the easiest to convert to a consumer scooter. The dash unscrews and you replace it with a $20 dash. It removes the Bird components and GPS.

Board screen cover, $7: https://www.ebay.com/itm/US-For-Xia...var=432366172973&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Makes it a folding scooter, $30: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Replacemen...e=STRK:MEBIDX:IT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

I got a police auction Bird from a friend for $20 Bird, peeled the sticker off and used a T6 to remove the board and GPS unit. And installed the new board, and connected to the Mi app, and I was off and going.

It's great to keep in the van just to go and zip around on.

I use Lime a lot. Very convenient for my job. They do not climb hills but I'm 6 ft and 240 lbs so there's that. One would be sweet at the campground but can't imagine one even being useful boondocking.
