East Buttress of Whitney

Just got back from a great trip to Whitney. This marks my 11th time to the summit and 7th time by either the East Face Route or East Buttress and once by skiing. I brought along a friend who had never climbed before and had never climbed been up Whitney. He had a great time and was thrilled to climb it rather than hike it for his first time on the mountain. We spent two days on the mountain, one day hiking into Upper Boy Scout Lake where we camped and then the next morning we got up early, climbed the peak and hiked out. A fun time was had by all:sombrero:

Very cool, I'd definitely like to do Whitney someday, but I'd probably hike instead of climb. I'm an east coaster so I think I'll need to take a long hike to acclimatize to the higher elevation. Highest peak we have here in North Carolina is less than half of Whitney's elevation!

The climb is not too hard, I have taken several people up the East Buttress and East Face who had little or no climbing experience. You do however have to be at least halfway physically fit, and taking a few days to do it helps get used to the altitude.

I grew up in Lone Pine.

been up Whitney a few times. Quite the tourist trap theses days.

Last time I was up there I came up and over the pinacles from twin lakes, after being the back country for 18 days. Whitney Portal was our exit for that trip.

Before heading down we made our way to the top.

90% of the people up there had fanny-pack on.... some even with Teva sandals
I even remember a few people checking their cellular phones for signals. Silly people.

Me and mine were the only ones up there with full packs. Some strange looks that day...... :ylsmoke:


That same day, while relaxing against my pack on the top of Whitney, just as I was about to doze off 3 guys came right over the face.

I dont think Ive EVER seen that much rope before in my life. Backpacker I am, climber.... not so much :Wow1:
Some serious respect for that type of climb. The last few thousand feet of that climb is no joke.
