Ford is proceeding with plans to install their EcoBoost turbocharged engines in more models. For 2012 Ford Explorer, Edge and Focus get a 2.0L EcoBoost engine that produces 240 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. These numbers are similar to the power output of the 2011 3.7L V6, but with better fuel economy.

The Explorer FWD model is rated at 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway. Unfortunately, the AWD Explorer is only available with the V6, which is rated to return 17 city. 23 highway.

I expect that, in time, the 2.0L engine will be available in the AWD Explorer, too

The 2011 Explorer AWD is a computer controlled system that delovers power to the front wheels until some slip is detected. Ford has implemented a switch-selectable "terrain management system" to tell the computer that you're driving in snow, sand and so forth. The information is used to permit more or less slippage before the computer steps in.

so you would rather have FWD only than AWD? The engine choice sounds great, but I would rather get it in a flex than an explorer if FWD was the only choice.

I really like the idea of a turbo 4 banger under the hood of an SUV, to bad it's going into a sheet metal abomination with plastic molding. I've often thought about how if I was supreme ruler of the world I would require GM to put the 2.2 or even 2.6 in the canyon/colorado and offer an SUV version of that same platform. Just take out the bulkhead between the bed and cab and put a top on it, like the old 4runner design, I'd even make it the official vehicle of my regime :sombrero:
