Electronics in a Expedition Land Rover

Good point Arthur!

I'd have to say hands down the old Izusu 3.9 is a tried and true motor that takes all sorts of abuse! By the number that survive in delivery Vans over here the simplicity goes a long way towards making it easy to live with, the same can be said for the 200/300Tdi but some feel these to a bit underpowered, but reliable non the less. The Td5? Heck I don't even have mine running yet but I suspect that it too will be pretty reliable but would I choose the 300 over it for a long range trekster motor? You bet! On the other hand if it's the only thing I had I wouldn't be afraid to go with it.

I started with this topic because I am currently evaluating the type of my next "exploration rig" My current Disco Tdi300 and trailer or a Defender 130 & not trailer.
If I am going by my preferences only and not what the silly bureaucracy will impose on us regarding "green vehicles" I will go for a Defender 130 with a Isuzu 3.9 turbo diesel.
The problem is that a lot of money will be invested in this rig which I have not doubt will be better and cheaper than the new one to only be declared road unworthy in the future because of the pollution laws !
I am doing some research on the net regarding economic diagnostic systems available in the market but I do not know if they are the solution when we are in a remote area.
Some of the links are:

Why such a big rig?

I guess that your referring to the LR 130 as a big rig .
Well, I done 8 month with my wife in a BMW motorcycle towing a trailer when I was about 46, then because we find out that when we hit the ground we did not bounced like we used to be, I purchased a 21 seater bus and converted it to a motorhome. After exploring the east coast of Oz for 2 years continuously we realized that the Mazda have serious limitations to go to bad roads.
Now we are planning again doing extensive touring and at 62 I like to have a bit of more comfort so the Defender is the answer.
Why the 130? well it is hard to find another vehicle with so much payload capacity and so economical to run plus is reliable and strong.
Some times I am dreaming with a Isuzu NPR 300 4WD or a Canter but the wheels are getting to heavy to change.
Cheers
