Emergency brake

I suspect the spring which retracts the emergency brake shoes has broken or come detached as I am getting some brake squeak at low speeds which coincides with driveshaft rotation. Anybody mess with that system? Doesn’t seem like it is a pressing fix. Is there a reason to think otherwise?

Yes, possibly. I’m on the road and considering delaying further investigation until I get home. By the way, it’s a 99 FG.

Still the same deal. Noise while you are driving around will tell you a lot if something is getting caught. Reversing back at that point may shift it again to not be a problem.
Not that hard to investigate. Remove the four nuts that hold the tailshaft to the handbrake drum, slide that end of shaft back. Slide hand brake drum off, remove parts, drum back on, tailshaft on and your done.

Thanks. It didn’t appear to me that the shaft would slide back enough to remove the drum and I thought the whole driveshaft might have to be dropped

If yours has a Centre bearing, such as mine does being a dual cab with the 2 tailshafts, then I've always had to drop that as well to get at the handbrake, easy job, only 2 extra bolts if needed. The brake is a simple mechanism, easy enough as Dan said to take a look and rule it in or out as the culprit.
Good luck.

It does have a bearing about 30” behind the brake. That’s what made me suspect that more would need to be removed than just the front u joint bolts.

Without disassembly I discovered the exact problem. The pin/spring/90 degree twist washer which attaches the right shoe is no longer tight. I was able to determine this by grasping the pin at the outside of the backing plate and moving it around. The left side pin is completely tight. Anyone know if generic pins/springs/washers will work or are these Fuso specific?

They may be Fuso specific but saying that they look like normal pins with a U-shaped wafer washer (could use springs and washer instead). This I have seen in other brake setups. The pin length would be the biggest concern.

Thanks. Tom’s Truck Parts sells the whole assembly so I’ll order everything and get it up to snuff as the truck has 230k miles on it. Probably wait until I get home to do it. or maybe to a friends house since he has a lift. I stopped using the emergency brake and the squeak/squeal has pretty much gone away. I was carrying a nice pair of aluminum chocks which are an adequate substitute except for starting out on a steep hill.

Dug into it today at my friend’s house since he has a lift. Both U shaped springs which hold the shoes to the backing plate had lost all tension, just flopping around. So I replaced them with new. Haven’t driven far yet but no screeching or squealing
