Enjoying my modded Northstar 800TC

I'm new to the forum and enjoyed readying other posts on modifications made to other Northstar TCs. I purchased my 2007 Northstar 800TC earlier this year and wanted to make it self sufficient for hunting trips here in Colorado. It was going to sit on a 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 and luckily I had the factory air ride suspension. This levels out the payload and also makes it easier when loading/unloading since I can lower the ride height. I swapped out the factory wheels with some 18" Duratracs that are E rated.

The camper was in great shape except for the countertop needing replaced due to the previous owner leaving the window open, causing rain to enter. I decided to remove the stove/oven combo and make a cabinet for storage. I made a new countertop and installed a new two burner stove.

After before I installed the cabinet door:

Next was to make a nice oak tabletop to replace the factory one. It's actually lighter too. I also swapped in a newer Pioneer radio with Bluetooth.

The mattress was tossed and a new Select Comfort memory foam was installed. I added a heated fitted mattress cover to keep the bed warm. We have one on our house bed and they are really nice. Dual controls for each side and they use very little power.

Then I installed a 240 watt solar system, two 6 volt golf cart batteries, a 300 watt Morningstar inverter with two USB 110 volt outlets and a voltage gauge. This works extremely well. All lights have been swapped to LED too.

We have used several lights for hours, played the radio, watched three movies on DVD on a 22" LED HDTV, ran the bed heater all night, furnace all evening in 37 degree outside temps and the batteries we at 74% in the morning. After an hour of sunlight, the batteries were back at 100%. I'm sold on solar!

The camper has the Arctic pack option with additional thermal panels for the tent portion and insulation in the walls. It stays pretty warm with the furnace turning in about every hour for five minutes.

Lastly, I made a rear deck to help getting in and out plus for storage of items when underway.

It has a small toilet that comes in handy. I replaced the outside shower head with one from Oxygenics. It uses less water and has more pressure. A outside canvass shower stall came with the camper too.

I've taken two trips with it. One to the Grand Canyon and another with my ATVs in tow. The Dodge handles it perfectly and I'm happy with the combo.

I leave in a couple of weeks for a 11 day elk hunt and feel I will be ready for it!

Really like this set-up and am going to steal a couple of your ideas on my build (once I find the right one). Are you running without the tailgat? Do you have any other pictures of the porch set-up? Specifically how the bottom edge is attached?

So far I've kept the tailgate on but will remove it for the hunting trip to save weight. I framed it with 1/4" aluminum angle and bolted it to the TC 1/4" thick 4" flat stock and carriage bolts. I used chains with an eyebolt to support the other end.

How much over payload do you think that camper puts you? I have a Ram 1500, and feel like I would be limited to a Four Wheel Camper with our 1,500lb-ish payload. Also, how many mpgs is it costing you?

My factory payload with the 20" Firestone tires is at 1400 lbs. I haven't weight it yet but estimate it being around 1800 lbs loaded. The upgraded e rated tires help out but the air suspension really helps out a lot. It sits level, rides and handles great. I drove 1400 miles to the Grand Canyon, drove through six 11,000+ foot passes with grades 6% or greater, mixed driving with sightseeing stops along the way and adveraged 16 mpg when I got home.

Oil eater.
I'm amazed the top will come down with that mattress.
Some scissor type steps work great on these campers.Much easier on the back entering. They are expensive but when you least expect it,there they are on Craigslist for $100.
The Happijac tiedowns afford some give and are extremely strong.
You're beating my mpg with the diesel and TC800.

It's close with only 1-2" of clearance when closed but that mattress sure is comfy. I looked into the scissor steps but they are $$$. I bought the 4 step ladder for just over a bill and can use it around the house too. That campsite wasn't level and was the only time the ladder was higher than the porch.

As to the mpg, the newer Dodges have eight speed trannies and combined with my 3.42 rear gears, I can get 23-24 mpg empty.

That's great. I'm at about 20 empty with the 6-speed. Can you sit up in the bed?
