Essential tools for long distance trips?

That raised a few eyebrows here too. Maybe he means the screwdriver can remove the stake, which can be done in a pinch. Yeah, not much use on the nut itself.

As for the snap ring pliers... I'm not sure what for. I've been wrenching 15 years and only JUST got a pair for the shop. I'm certainly not going to carry them around in my tool bag. Not much use. What field serviceable parts use snap rings? Idler pulleys. Interlock solenoids. And?

A more useful addition would be the 18mm stubby ratchet wrench for the engine mount.

The right size spanner to take off the cooling fan. (actually this is a permanent resident in my car under the rear seats)

Aha my bad. Missed the whole DII part. In that case ignore everything I said (really). You don't need the snap ring pliers, you do need the impact tools, and the screwdriver and hammer won't work.

As for the snap ring pliers... if you are doing the same job on a DI you better have them. Field serviceable, hmmm what if you break an axle on your DI and would like to remove it from the housing so you can lock the diff and still drive home. This could happen in the field. And I think that would qualify as servicing.

But again, you are right. Not applicable to this thread since the op has a DII

possibly u-joint retainging rings, some you can get out with duckbill pliers but some i have seen would require snap-ring pliers. although this could easily be determined before the trip so you could take the correct ones.

Interesting. So which cable is longer? I'm guessing the front. One could just carry the one with the longest cable and ziptie up the slack in an emergency?
