Not sure how many of you will know this already, but after some research into the upcoming euro 5 trucks due for release later this year, i found out that they are upgrading to a 6.5t GVM, and will be ditching the 4M50 4.9Lt in favour of, wait for it, a 3Lt mercedes motor.
now it has been pointed out that merc build some very high quality, high output/small displacement diesel engines. i think i read the outputs for it were around 175hp and 450nm, so it puts down acceptable numbers on paper, but i think in a situation like this theres no substitute for cubic inches (unless your talking about a chev 6.5, their crap..
), and i cant see a poor little 3L lasting any more than 300k pushing around a big heavy FG. whereas the previous engines (4.2NA, 3.9 turbo, 4.9 CR) are all, relatively speaking, big lazy engines that arent too fussed and (should) last a long time.
my opinion on the matter anyways, be curious to see other peoples.
